Pope Benedict did what popes do best today: marched into Amman, Jordan, and urged the local populace to show greater respect for women.

Really? What about Canon 1024, "only a baptized man can validly receive sacred ordination"?

Well, it's honestly a very hard thing to quantify and I'm not sure that it's possible given the small amount of sources dating to early Catholicism and early Christianity. However - Catholicism is 600 years older than Islam, so it had 6 more centuries (in an extremely anti-woman time period) to cause damage.
When you consider the Inquisition, the wars against heretics, the Crusades, invasions by the Ottoman Empire, the Catholic collusion with the Nazis, modern Islamic fundamentalism/terrorism...I just don't think the pope has much of a historical leg to stand on when he lectures to the Middle East.
