Sometimes the feminists make it hard to be feminist

I've just caught up on Dollhouse, only to find out that it only has two more episodes to go :(.  Oh well, it's going out with a bang and the second season has been excellent from the get go, whereas it started out as a pretty dull, flat show with a deeply troubling moral compass. Most of the characters still have deeply comflicted moral compasses, ( Read more... )

I completely agree with your definition of feminism as you've put it here, but I don't think this blogger is an isoloated phenomenon. I think the problem with radical feminism is that, even though it's important to recognize that patriarchy is somewhat pervasive and is still very influential, it removes individual agency from actions. If a woman acts in a way they don't approve of, she's been brainwashed by the patriarchy. If it's a man, he's part of the patriarchy.

Radical feminism is a philosophy as much as a form of activism, and this kook is the end result of some of that philosophy.

She is a total wackjob. She's the kind that has veered so far off to one extreme that she has almost managed to do a complete circle and pop up on the other. In trying to protect my vagina, she's really just making me so conscious of it I might never enjoy it again. If I took anything she said to heart, that is.

Hehee, I totally agree. I just can't fathom why someone could think it's appropriate to say "I'm a separatist - I try to avoid men" and never consider understand that it's just as bad as replacing 'men' with, say, black women, or gay people, or Catholics.

When a position says more about the person taking it than about the world at large, it can't really be accepted into a general movement like feminism. It is the nature of the beast, to try and prove that we are credible and right at any costs, but penises do go into vaginas quite often, and quite often both parties are not only ok with it, they actually kinda dig it. I have to wonder if she ever sat back and really thought about what she is saying.

As a lesbian, it's probably a nice fantasy to think that all women will eventually shake off the chains of the patriarchy and come sleep with her.

Lucky for all of us that, for every one of these pointless, useless ranters who give feminism a bad name, there are hundreds (if not 1000s) of women doing good works and spreading positive/helpful messages in their communities to/for/in support of feminism and women's lives.

Guess I'm saying: please don't waste your precious time reading that person...

Yes, that is probably a good suggestion and I haven't read any more by her since posting this...

Sometimes I get interested in reading a feminism-oriented blog and read a few bits and pieces, but I have yet to find a blog that really pulls me in and demands I read regularly. And then I occasionally find something like this which makes me run for the hills...

I read Jezebel and Broadsheet (on Salon) quite a bit, if you haven't tried them already.

Cool! I've read a few articles from Jezebel but find they focus more on celebrities than I'm interested in reading about. I'll have a look at Broadsheet now - they've got a lot of ammo today as that gross sex doll came out.

I think sex dolls are doomed on a technical level until they can figure out how to create a mouth that can perform oral sex yet still close properly...

Yeah that lady is a wackjob. Biologically men AND women need sex, not just want it. If she truly believes the intercourse does those things, she shouldn't be doing them.
