Walking to the Taku River

Jul 06, 2006 01:08

Unfortunately, I really won't have reliable internet access until the Round River program ends in the beginning of August, so this may be my last update until then. I thought we were in a city, but it turns out Atlin has only 450 year-round residents. Oops ( Read more... )

I'd love to, but we haven't seen a one yet! Our trip leaders are perplexed, as we know that a mother bear with two cubs, in addition to a lone male grizzly, were in the vicinity of our 4-day campsite. Two of the girls even swear they heard something moving around at night, but were too scared to look. I figure it was just our leader Chris, who hadn't shaved for a while and therefore looked a bit grizzled.

How about a photo of a grizzly paw print? Or scat? I could definitely get a great picture of grizzly poop.

Would that be a Northern Goshawk and a sharp-shinned hawk?
There are larger birds that eat other birds, but are in the genus Falco. Gyrfalcons are significantly larger than a Goshawk, and Merlins are about the size of a sharp-shinned hawk.
There might be some warblers there too, I suppose.

Hope you're enjoying yourself

Yup, what I meant was the largest and smallest Accipiters, the Goshawk and Sharp-shinned Hawk. We've also seen the Pine Grosbeak, Townsend's Solitaire, Spotted Sandpiper, Franklin Gull, Varied Thrush, Violet-green Swallow (flying away from the Sharp-shinned Hawk!), plenty of Ruffled and Spruce Grouse, tons of Grey Jays, three Greater Yellowlegs (all of them angry at us), and more Bald Eagles than you could shake a stick at. Not that I'd recommend shaking sticks at Bald Eagles; they're HUGE.

By the time I get back, I'll know lots of bird species. At least, a bunch that live up here. Who knows, maybe I'll even learn to identify some of them by their call! Anything's possible.
