My grandmother does not play nearly as big a role in my life as my great-grandmother because the latter raised me and still lives with mi madre. In fact, Mom and Gramma (Ma-Marina) didn't even get close until maybe a decade ago because G-gramma (Ma-Maria) also raised my mother in Guatemala for a dozen years until they joined my grandmother in the United States. Marina is a more worldly woman, not as warm and involved as Maria is, and lives with her youngest son, Orlando, where she is raising his kids now.

I have a feeling once she hits her seventies, my children will have the same warm great-grandmother that I did. I just gotta wait a little while.

Although, from what my mother says, Ma-Marina understands my mother's need to go and supports it.
