My Ask the Maker thread is
here if you have any burning questions you need answered. If anything in this tutorial isn't clear enough, don't be afraid to ask me about it. ♥
I started off with this as my base.
I wanted to brighten things up and add in some contrast, so I used levels.
20, 1.0, 199
Things were a little too vibrant for my taste (I wanted the icon to look a little old and faded) so I added the following gradient map (010101 to e5dacd) at 20%.
Next I added a +50 vibrance layer set to color.
I wanted things to be warmer, so I added a warming photo filter.
I forget why I did this (I think one of the later steps made it neccessary...) but I went to levels and used the following settings to make it darker.
48, 1.00, 255
I wanted the colors to stand out more, so I used color balance (only on the midtones).
+38, +30,-36
I had gotten away from the faded look, so I duplicated the gradient map used earlier, dragged it to the top, and set it to 50%.
I wanted it to be a little brighter, so I used levels.
0, 1.00, 212 (but I made the opacity 55%).
I copy-merged and sharpened it, then I applied the following texture (I don't remember who it's by, but it was a big tumblr texture that I cropped and I think inverted?) set to screen.
