It's historically inaccurate. Kissing is a western sign of affection that had not yet been introduced into Japan at the time the movie. At the end when they kissed, he'd be moving in and she'd be like "OMG WTF Why are you trying to put your tounge in my mouth!?"
I somehow doubt that. Kissing is in the Kama Sutra, which was made in India. Thats IndoChina, and all of Chinas culture was brought over to Japan, greatly influencing it (Japan). I suppose of course the isolantionist Chinese could have kept kissing out of their nation. Did I go too far with the Kama Sutra reference?
