I had my first classes today. There's one girl in my class I know I'm going to be friends with. She actually reminds me somewhat of you, Miranda, but I can't quite put my finger on why. She's half Chilean but looks white and she's very witty and sarcastic, just what I like. Her name is Jen, she said ( Read more... )

Really? A half-Chilean version of me is going to your college? ;)

Hah, that roommate situation reminds me of mine last year. One roommate, Nel, was never there and the other, Emily, never spoke to me. So we often stayed on our own beds with our computers.... Thing is, I hope you are willing to be more talkative with your roommates (I'm sure you are) and vice-versa, because I never fixed this problem last year. I felt like I hardly knew Emily at all.

I feel like the three of them are closer with each other than with me [...]
Yeah, things might feel that way, especially if all three of them are minorities. Nel and I definitely got along better with each other than with Emily. (It's the Puerto Rican-ness.) It's the beginning, so it's awkward for everyone. You'll be fine, and even if it doesn't work out, there are other people on campus with whom you'll get along.

Every time I enter my room, I make sure to start a conversation with Sophie, even if it's as simple as, "So how much homework did they give you?" and we're doing really well so far. She always answers and we have a little chat. I think India's warming up to me. She says hi whenever we pass each other, and I've gotten the idea from overheard conversations that she thinks I'm nice. And Angela, as I mention in a later entry, is really fun to talk to in the evenings, even if, during the day, I hardly talk to her because she's on the phone/computer with her friends constantly. So, all in all, it's going pretty well with these girls. And today we're -- or perhaps I should say I'm -- going to get a microwave. Finally! You'd think it would come with the apartment since it's such a basic need for college kids, but no.
