Dickens
I was thinking about reading some Dickens to my five-year-old daughter. Does anyone have any suggestions for which one would be best? I'd like to avoid the darkest plot twists (they give her nightmares), and key plot elements that are too adult to explain.

Sunny night
I was explaining to my five-year-old what an oxymoron is. I gave the example "sunny night" because you can't see the sun at night. Except, as she pointed out, you can see sunlight reflected from the moon.

Historic breakthroughs
Everyone is talking about how Obama's election is an historic breakthrough, and it is. Would anyone like to predict when we'll see a U.S. president who is (openly):
- Female;
- Jewish;
- Muslim;
- Atheist;
- Gay; or

Trying to go to sleep
Her: Let's do rhymes. Pillow … nillow.
Me: "Nillow" isn't a word.
Her: Pillow … millow.
Me: "Millow" isn't a word either.
Her: Yes it is.
Me: What does it mean?
Her: it means … that cheese has holes in it.
Her: Do you know what a jamda bear is?
Me: No.
Her: Do you want to know?
Me: Yes
Her: It's like a panda bear, only it has jam.

Today is my son's second birthday. After the requisite videoconferencing, pancake eating and present opening, we went to see a model train exhibition. There was a touch-screen information screen there and my four-year-old was teaching my two-year-old how to operate it. "This is Wikipedia," she pronounces confidently. -
Reflection
Yesterday I said to my son (nearly two), "I love you." He promptly replied, "I love me."
