After the mini episodes First Night and Last NightOutside the TARDIS was Alderin Beta. It was 21st September 2360. He'd just picked up River Song on her first night in Stormcage. He knew why she was there, of course, and he knew just what she'd sacrificed for him. Taken to kill him at Lake Silencio but unable to do it; tore time apart because of it ( Read more... )

It was her first night in Stormcage. Her first night of 12,000 consecutive life sentences. Her first night when the Doctor came to call. She had been waiting for this moment, her next meeting after their marriage. Because, this? This was their honeymoon.

Reaching the doors to the TARDIS, she pulled them open, looking out onto a dark night. The TARDIS was perched amongst rocks and grass, lodged on the edge of a mountainside like he had promised. It had only just reached midnight and the stars weren't entirely out yet, but that didn't stop the view being fascinating. She gasped as she stood there, her hands still holding the open doors. The breeze came in from the inky black sea, ruffling her bountiful head of hair while the moonlight silhouetted her perfectly in the TARDIS doorway.

"Oh, I'm already impressed," she said, stepping out into the dirt and walking carefully to the edge of the cliff face, looking down at the sea below.

"Yeah?" the Doctor said with a smirk as he stepped from the TARDIS, pulling the door shut to behind him.

"Well hold onto your hair, River Song, because things are about to get a whole lot more impresiverer."

It was most definitely a word.

"This is nothing yet," he said, turning on his heel and looking around at the sky. "Boring. Like a Thursday night in Clapham. Rubbish. Ooh but just you wait."

Turning, River looked to the Doctor with a slow smile. "Well, we're going up, aren't we?" she asked, lifting her head as she did so. She squinted through the dark, seeing a hint of tree branches stretching high above her on the mountain. When she realised what she was looking at, she gasped. "Oh! Now that's magnificent!"

"Isn't it just," he said. There was a healthy grin on his face then. He was managing to push aside the look in the eyes of his older self, if only for a while. He had all this to live before he had to do that yet. He wouldn't do it yet.

"And it will be," he said. "Possibly the most magnificent thing you'll ever see. Possibly the most you ever could. So many stars, River. And the whole sky lit up. Almost like daylight, but each little star, and each little pin prick in the sky, visible. You could count them, but it'd probably take your whole life. Probably take my whole life. Which really would be something and I'd probably lose count and have to start over again."

With a click of his fingers he moved forward, striding ahead.

"Come along, Song."
