A lesson in time [for songofsong]

The Doctor was dancing around the TARDIS with purpose. He seemed to knock and lift levers and switches as though they were completely at random, but there was a method in his madness, or at least a madness in his method. River Song was young. Or much younger than she would be. She was only just beginning, and she had a long way to go. So what ( Read more... )

River was stood at the console in a long dress, catching a glimpse of her reflection in the copper-like walls while the Doctor bustled past her, telling her to hit a lever. She blinked quickly when she realised she was being spoken to and spun back into action, doing as he instructed.

"You still haven't told me where we're going!" she pointed out, looking up past the central column.

She had been picked up from Stormcage only moments before, fresh and excitable, ready for adventure. She had happily rushed off to get changed out of her prison wear when he showed her to a long day dress, a style that already gave her a hint to where they might be travelling to.

"Is it Earth?" asked River, swinging slightly against the console as the TARDIS hurtled on. "Got to be early 20th century. Am I right?"

"Might be," the Doctor said nonchalantly. He looked up towards her with a slight smirk though.

Before he'd even picked her up the Doctor had got changed. He was dressed as dapper as could be in his morning suit. All top hat and tails (though the top hat was currently hooked over the coat stand).

Shifting once more around the console he pulled up heavily on the main handbrake, parking the TARDIS and nodding towards the door.

"Well then," he said. "Want to find out?"

When the TARDIS was pulled to a halt, River fell forward against the console, her hands catching her weight. She let out a soft laugh and righted herself, slowly turning her head to look to the TARDIS doors. This was always her favourite part, knowing that beyond those doors was a whole world of adventure, waiting to be discovered.

Without speaking a word, she pushed away from the TARDIS console, slowly making her way down the steps and towards the closed doors.

The Doctor skipped up behind her, and lifted his hat from the coat stand. He kept it in his hand and after she pushed them open, followed her out the doors.

Into a store cupboard.

"Yes," he said. "We are in a cupboard. It isn't always glamorous."
