There's a bit from the movie Patch Adams:

Roommate: I don't mean to be rude, but aren't you a little old to be starting medical school?

Patch: You know, Babe Ruth was 33 when he joined the Yankees.

Roommate: ... No he wasn't.

Patch: You're right. But I could really use an example like that, and if you ever find one, let me know.

Oh man.... Totally agree with all of this. Don't they usually say that success is 10% talent and 90% perseverance? It's so true. If you don't have the drive, you got nothin'.

On a note similar, Alan Rickman wasn't a known actor until he hit his forties :)

I guess the main obstacle that comes with age is ....making a living, and family, complications. I agree with most of what you say in the post, although I think *talent* exists - something ephemeral that you can't quite describe; the kind of thing that makes Mozart different from another concert pianist. What makes a good writer different from a David Foster Wallace.

But the good news is that, at least when it comes to writing, it's never too late.

You're right, of course. I mean, if you're terrible, you can get acceptably good, but you're never going to be a master.
