Here's how this is going to work, Port.

[ This makes sense to him. He's at the point in his life where he has everything to boast about, colonies, dwindling wealth and enourmous influence. England firmly believes he is on his way to modernising the world, and to bringing his influence to every corner of the globe with his abilities and wealth. Africa is somewhat of a pet project to him; there's value in it, and he is going to make it a better place. It's been said of him before that he was a ruthless savage when it came to dealing with his enemies, but there were other murmurs from the nations, ones that spoke of his own disloyalty towards even his allies. He really wasn't disloyal ( ... )

[ It is pretty safe to assume that Portugal is furious, livid even. It's obvious by the agitated way that she's drumming her fingertips on the surface of the table, her bracelets jingling, particularly every time he mentions the word friend. ] You expect me to just leave quietly?

[ How much time and effort has she been putting into trying to maintain her influence in the area? And now England thinks he can just waltz in and have her leave what's been hers for centuries? ] You really ask this of me? Your cheek is astounding. [ How dare he. ]

This is a violation of our treaty and you know it.

My gosh, I'm so sorry for how late this is. (As I usually am...) noblemen September 12 2011, 20:16:02 UTC
[ Oh, he knows she's furious. He can feel the way she glances at him, the fiery gaze aimed in his direction. The only problem is, well, it doesn't bother him really. He really honestly believes that he can change the world, that he's going to make everything better, that he was the chosen country to take their stab at world domination. It's become somewhat of a focus project, an ultimate goal that shuts out all other social priorities. So as she sits there and fumes, he just withdraws a flask and uncaps it, taking a sit. ]

Well, yes, actually.

[ You see, he's so wrapped up in himself, so completely obsessed with his own delusions that he isn't really connected to the people around him anymore. As she insults him, he simply makes a face, suggesting how little her words really mean to him. ] I was hoping that you would be more reasonable about this, Port. I mean, you're a smart woman, you know the way the world works. I was really, really hoping that you would see it my way ( ... )

Soft? I think you are an idiot. A blinded one.

...Sim, I see how the world works... [ All too clearly. She folds her arms neatly in her lap, trying to control her temper and maintain some sense of decorum, it's not often that it really flares up and gets the better of her after all. ] I have no idea what you think you are going to achieve with this fiasco of yours, but let me tell you something... Whatever power you have now, it's not going to last. It won't be long until you are on your way out.

[ She looks him in the eye, hard. ] I give it fifty years perhaps, before you start to crumble. Perhaps even less. And we both know, to a nation, that length of time is nothing. You'll be needing your 'allies' again soon enough.

[ There's definite venom in her words, perhaps even a barely detectable amount of bitterness... She knows all too well the feeling of reaching the peak of your power and the prospect of facing a long decline downwards after all, it's already happened for her ( ... )

[ He sighs. ]

Regardless of your insults, I will accept this as you conceding to my proposal. A smart move, Portugal; I do think you will come to see things my way. It isn't as if I'm going to, you know, prevent you from utilising the railway as well. I think it'll be rather beneficial for the both of us.

[ For someone who actually means the world to him, her insults are rolling off of his skin like water separating from oil. He's too engaged in his goal, his purpose to care much about what she's warning him with, or the venom that she's using to do it with. It's sad how true her words are, and really how true they are at the present moment; even now, with all the money he's investing in his colonies, England's empire, or sorry, Great Britain is threatening to tear apart at the seams. But he doesn't care; he's in the right, she's in the wrong for all he's concerned. This is the right action and the right step in the right direction and she just doesn't have the same vision as him, and that's that ( ... )

[ She clenches her hand angrily on the surface of the table. ]

What relations? You've already thrown our treaty aside as if it were nothing and if things were to go the other way we would be on the brink of war as we speak right now. And I regret to think that my brother may have been right about you, that you cannot be trusted. Not even by me.

[ She leans back in her chair. ]

...Make no mistake, Inglaterra. If the decision were mine and my people's and not my king's, I would be fighting you every single step of the way. [ The truth of it all though is that Portugal is tired, tired of fighting, she's no longer the dominant power she once was and every single day seems to bring more anger and civil unrest and she can only begin to predict what lies ahead of her in the years to come, precious few of it good. This isn't going to help matters by any stretch of the imagination. ]

I will see myself out and in my own time, obrigada.
