it's not as if it'll break it, the magnets actually came from inside a computer. It's the floppy disks you shouldn't get too close

you could just modify a cd drive for that. I had the idea of attatching the magnets to the of a floppy drive so it automatically wipes the disk as it is inserted into the drive

I wouldn't say a lot of spare time, constructing a device like that only really takes a couple of minutes and you can work out how to do it during doing various mind numbing tasks.
