I have discovered why rum is associated with 1. the West Indies and 2. pirates. (I'd always vaguely wondered why yo-ho-hoing pirates didn't drink whiskey or vodka.) It is because of the huge sugar plantations in the West Indies. Are you garnering this knowledge from that pirate book you bought? I wonder, if I were to give you a list of books I've been really meaning to read, maybe you could read them and then put just the most important facts here on your journal. What do you say? You could start with "What's the Matter with Kansas?" and "Freakanomics". You're a peach. :-P
