I haven't joined the Doe Lake group because then everyone would know I'm there and I'm quite content to lurk. If people knew I was there, I'd have to answer questions about the summer and people (presumably) wouldn't be as free with their commments if they knew their boss was watching. I prefer to stay anonymous.

Congrats on getting your application in. The waiting game sucks. I'm hoping you had better luck than I did.

It certainly gives you a good idea of who you're dealing with this summer if you're able to lurk around. I wonder if they would be saying the same things they are now if they knew who's reading it. Not that they're writing anything bad, but something to keep in mind!....I think sometimes people forget that the internet is totally public.

This might be interesting for you - my prof is getting really irritated with people in my program using msn shorthand for writing their essays. Can you believe it?! People in 4th year actually do this. I don't think they've gotten to the extent of using "LOL" in their essays, but Susan noticed many more broken up sentences, parts of sentences, inappropriate short forms, etc. I also find it really interesting, like you do.

What boggles my mind is the quality of writing in emails I'm receiving ( ... )

You should see what I'm getting from my students for assignments. I didn't think it was rocket science to capitalize a person's name, but apparently it is. And I've taught it, and reviewed it too. It's not like they never heard about capitals before. What really gets me is when they capitalize it on one line, and don't capitalize it on the next one.

Today I got a journal entry that was two sentences long. Now, the first sentence was about 8 lines long, but the student did not feel it was necessary to use punctuation at all in those 8 lines. It seems I still have some work to do with them about grammar.

Yikes! Holy crap. That hurts my ears! It does seem to be a generational thing....hardly anyone I talk to on msn does that. But I would think it's also a social thing too, depending on who someone hangs out with. Internet lingo is contagious.

I guess there isn't much that you can say to the future LITS at this point, but I've heard of profs returning emails and saying that they won't respond until they're addressed in a respectful manner. To me, emailing a camp saying "hey!" if you haven't worked there yet and demanding some info is way off base. It's probably too hardcore to throw in a little "we prefer to be addressed by our name, and for you to use your proper name as well"....but man. I'd have a hard time not tearing them a new one if I were you.

They're all so little. and they expect that they will get hired no matter what. I was scared shitless when I applied because I wanted it so bad. I mean come on I cried when I got my first contract because I was so happy(Yes I know its sad), but these kids don't get it. Maybe their parent's haven't explained the fact that professionalism is key when applying for a job or a position. Who knows.
