Stop! Hammerchapel!

Nov 02, 2006 15:15

Standing on Baker Street's Westbound Circle line platforms a couple of weeks ago, I noticed that the service indicator on the Eastbound platform still bore the legend 'Whitechapel and Circle Trains', despite it being over ten years since that branch of the Met got renamed. This got me thinking about the Hammersmith And City line, and what a rubbish ( Read more... )

I had no idea that that was why the Bakerloo line was so named! Tho it makes sense, I suppose.

The other day (at Leicester Sq station I think) I saw an old Underground map which still had Charing Cross as being on the Jubilee line! Since I'd ONLY just trained myself to think otherwise, this confused the living bejesus out of me.

Hammerchapel!

The pink line = rubbish by any name. Does anyone love it?

We-ll, it's quite handy if you want to get from King's Cross to Mile End, or from Paddington to King's Cross, which I often do. And it's nowhere near as rub as the District Line. But aye, it is a bit too trundly and the three flat junctions do lead to an awful lot of stopping in tunnels.

I like it. Hamchapel might be even better at three syllables. However, its suggestion of collective reverence towards cured pork products might be considered potentially problematic to some key faith communities within the capital.

Hammerchapel would make West Ham fans happy, and I'm reliably informed that it is "nice" to make people "happy".

The implied pork reverence would be especially unfortunate given the traditional and current populations of Whitechapel, both largely adhering to one or t'other of the key faiths in question.

i want the right sense of scale, but yes the expanse of empty grid (even when project is complete) is a problem.
