I am way overdue for an update, and I will try to post a real one soon, but at the moment I just had to say that it's snowing in AustinBy the standards of my midwestern heritage this barely qualifies as a brisk fall day, but Austin only gets this kind of weather once or twice in a decade. It's 28 degrees and there is white stuff all over the lawn

But we're icebound in Cardinal House. Naturally, nobody here wants to drive. The danger, of course, is not from the snow or ice on the roads. It's from the fellow Texans on the snow and ice on the roads. Not only can natives of Central Texas not drive on slick stuff, but naturalized immigrants apparently go through a very specific form of brain surgery, rendering them similarly incapable, before being allowed to settle here.

I went up to Denis a few minutes ago and said, "So, we've been icebound all day. You considering cannibalism yet?"
"Sure!" he said. "And I know everyone else is, too. The trick, of course, is that it's very important to be the one to start it off."
