This thread is going into Crazy Land/ crazy land / Crazy land / crazy Land / CrAzY LaNd faster than I thought.

And wth to this:

"I don't mind seeing uncapitalized names on principle, but it does look bad. I find myself lumping it in the same category as not capitalizing proper nouns and the beginning of sentences; in other words, laziness."

Idk!  I ( Read more... )

How about the part where (s)he states that just because it's capitalized, it's clearly a proper noun. I didn't want to be the second person to point out that this kinda ignores the definition of the term (in part because I already did via an edit and didn't want to look like a massive douche), but.

Also, agreed wholeheartedly. Isn't one of the main arguments for capitalizing Pokémon names in fanfic "because canon does it"? To me, that sounds like a lot less effort than saying, "I capitalize [insert name here] because of [insert logical and thought-out reason here], but I don't capitalize [insert something else here] because of [insert equally logical and thought-out reason here]." Not to mention the argument that not capitalizing = laziness completely ignores the fact that a lot of people will judge a fic/the amount of effort an author puts into it based on the overall quality of a work, not just a handful of words that aren't capitalized. Never mind the fact that there's not actually a stigma about not capitalizing as far as I ( ... )

I missed that whilst eye-rolling probably. I've skimmed a bit as her argument was "Lol, the games do it!" to "Lol, the French!" to "Lol, they're not words!" His/her arguments are so full of ... I don't even know.

Laziness?

This thread is just a beautiful train wreck.

I have to admit though, I've seen this particular point argued so many times I just have to try to popcorn.gif at it. Otherwise, I get irritated. Mostly because some people are stupid in trying to defend their arguments with logic that is not really logic.

CAPITAL LETTERS MAKE PEOPLE PASSIONATE.

It really is. I enjoy these threads more than the "Hao get moar reviews?" threads. There's another popular thread idea I'm missing, but I can't remember it ...

THEY REALLY DO!

Little does s/h/it know I've had a lingistics rant brewing inside me for like three months.

They seem to be seriously missing the point of this is how grammar and words work. Language doesn't exist in a vacuum - words gain meaning by what meaning we ascribe to them. Official dictionaries acknowledge words that were created and came to be used in popular culture (I wish I could remember examples right now), right? And if you bring a word into use in a language, wouldn't it have to follow the grammatical laws of said language? Again, it can't exist in a vacuum.

I don't study linguistics, but I don't think this is complicated stuff.

Honestly, I'm pro-capitalization, but people like the ones in this thread that make me a little ashamed to be in that camp. :/

One of my favorite posts by Farla in her capitalization thread was a breakdown moment where someone said something so incredibly stupid that she just devolved into shouting, "DO YOU SEE, CAPITALIZATION PEOPLE? THIS IS WHO IS ON YOUR SIDE."

XD God, I actually remember that. The secondhand embarrassment I got from that was another low point in my history of endorsing capitalization. Yeesh.

On the plus side, MHugs realizes that you can't say "'Pikachu' is not a word." :P

An admirable accomplishment. Except "Pikachu" is still not part of the English language. And the pronunciation of the name is somehow relevant to her argument.

...I doubt she even knows how English got a majority of its vocabulary.

Meanwhile I'm still amused at my initial thoughts on who the TO had been talking about in the first sentence, and that it turned out to be the thoughts of pretty much everyone else. XD

It hadn't actually crossed my mind that it was Farla. It is fun that I quoted part of her infamous "lowercase pokemon names" review in my response (Ash's pikachu is called Pikachu).

I do like that the OP was so pissed that he brought it over to SPPf where a lot of people are Farla's friends/agree with her. I wonder what he was expecting ...
