Kristen was angry: at life, at death, at good, at evil.
Angry? Frustrated, too. Tears of frustration welled up in her eyes as she regarded her husband. He really didn't want to go off to Nepal for three months, but this prospective billionaire buyer of their mountain-climbing business was flexing his muscles and demanding that Andy literally show him the ropes, otherwise no deal. And since it was an obscene amount of money...
"I just don't want to be a single mom again!" she wailed.
"I know." Andy reached out and took out her hand.
The tears were also for Andy. The poor guy didn't want to break her promise to stay home and help her raise the kids.
Damn this world and its worship of money! If you have money, you're everything. If you don't, you're nothing.
They needed the money to expand this old house. It had its charms, but space wasn't one of them.
"C'mon, honey, sit down."
Kristen complied. They were stuck with the situation, unless she wanted to relocate her family to North Korea. Capitalism demanded money, and Andy leaving for Nepal would get them plenty of it.
She blew out a sigh. Squeezing Andy's hand, she smiled wearily. She glanced at the blueprints. Maybe they could sell this place and instead of putting up with construction, additions, and various other inconveniences, they could just move into a new place. They would have enough money if the billionaire bully came through.
The thought appealed to her. Shed the past and embark on a bright future. Surely they could find another Catholic school for the girls. If the money was good enough, maybe quit her job with the Church and get away from Leland Townshend (and David). Temptation was always lurking around at the edges.
"What are you thinking about?" Andy asked affectionately.
How close I came to cheating on you.
"Oh, just about these blueprints." Kristen swept her hand over the plans. "They're pretty complicated."
"Expanding a house usually is." He cocked his head. "Are you getting cold feet?"
"No, uh...yes, maybe?" Kristen sighed. "I don't know."
Andy chuckled. "Listen, all this could give anyone a Popsicle headache. We don't have to decide anything right now." He squeezed her hand.
"Yeah, no use counting our chickens."
"You don't think Billionaire Boy will come through?"
"Who knows with a billionaire? They're all pretty much either flakes or on power trips."
"Can't argue with that." Andy put down his pencil by his notepad. "Wonder what it would be like to have so much money that you feel entitled to push people around?"
"Let's hope we never get that rich."
Andy laughed. "Doubt we'll have to worry about that." His blue eyes sparkled
Kristen felt her heart leap. Those blue eyes and his sense of humor were a few of the things that had first attracted her to him. Guilt flooded over her again.
She knew that David was a Forbidden Temptation, someone to fuel her deepest, darkest desires. Andy was her husband, father of her children, partner-in-life.
She didn't want to lose David's friendship! He was acting weird lately
Kristen sighed. Time to forget David and concentrate on Andy.
Also, there was something weird going on in this house, too. It didn't 'feel' right.
"I don't want to go."
"I know you don't." She suddenly added, "Just don't die."
"Okay." Andy chuckled.
"And get half the money up front. We have to start on that bathroom."
"I will " Andy looked at her. "I love you so much."
Kristen whispered, "I love you, too." She sighed. "Oh." Blinking back tears, she said, "Being a single mom really sucks."
"I know; I know."
She sniffled. "It's almost over."
Both she and Andy looked up as the pipes rumbled and moaned.
