PAJAMA PARTY

Clark flew through the Cave and up the stairs, Dick pushing the grandfather clock door open.  Alfred was in the library selecting a book when they appeared.  Only years of practice of living with the Bat-family allowed him not to drop it.

“My goodness, Master Clark!  What is the matter?”

“A possible concussion, Alfred.”

“Right upstairs to Master Dick’s room, sir.”

Clark nodded and Dick merely smiled as they flew through the hall, foyer, and up the grand staircase.  Dick would take any opportunity to fly and so didn’t insist on walking.

Clark flew up to Dick’s room, which was right next to Bruce’s.  Briefly he wondered if Dick ever regretted having to move back here from the master bedroom he had shared with Bruce during their time together, but resolutely set that aside.  He now had a place in Clark’s bed whether in Metropolis or Smallville.  That was what mattered most.

Clark carefully set Dick down on his bed and began tugging his pixie boots off.

“See, I told you that you could keep me awake.”

“Wise-ass.”

Dick turned over and wiggled. “Pretty nice ass, huh?”

Clark rolled his eyes. “Incorrigible.”

“I hope so!”

Dick turned over onto his back when he heard Alfred coming up the stairs.  He began unlacing his tunic and Clark unfastened his cape.  Alfred entered and went to a dresser drawer, taking out a pair of light-green pajamas.

“Alfred, you should take out my Superman jammies,” Dick teased.

“I believe you no longer fit in them, young sir.”

Dick laughed and Clark shook his head. “Don’t encourage him, Alfred.”

“Oh, but I do, Master Clark.  That is exactly what this drafty old house needs.”

Dick blushed a little at the compliment and Clark’s eyes softened. “You’re right, of course, Alfred.”

Clark sat on the bed and brushed the hair off his lover’s forehead. “You really need to rest, Dick.”

“I’ve taken worse shots than that before.”

“Head injuries are nothing to fool around with.” Clark’s eyes focused and then he relaxed. “No fractures, hairline or otherwise.”

“You X-rayed me!”

“Of course.”

“What am I, a box of chocolates?  Trying to find the flavor you like?”

Clark leaned forward and whispered, “I’m happy with a creamy center, myself.”

Dick blushed and Clark laughed as he drew back.

“Master Dick, since you should not sleep for awhile, I will bring up some cookies and milk.”

“Thanks, Alfred.”

As Alfred departed, Clark and Dick finished the task of getting Dick out of his costume and into his pajamas.

“I don’t wear pajamas very often, you know.”

“I know.”

Dick buttoned his top. “I’m more used to getting out of clothes with you around than getting in them.”

“I know.”

Dick looked suspiciously at his lover but Clark merely smiled.

By the time that Alfred returned with a plate of warm chocolate chip cookies and two glasses of cold milk, Dick was sitting up in bed and Clark was sitting on the edge of the bed pulling the covers up to his lover’s waist while fluffing the pillows.

“Here you go.” Alfred set the tray on the nightstand.  He checked Dick’s eyes and performed a few other quick tests, satisfied at the results. “To be on the safe side, no sleeping for awhile.  Master Clark, we have fresh honeydew melon on hand for breakfast.  I know that is a favorite of yours.”

“Oh, I’m not staying, Alfred.”

“Of course you are.  Master Dick needs entertainment to keep from falling asleep.  You shall provide that.” Both Clark and Dick blushed but Alfred merely smiled. “Not of the acrobatic variety while Master Dick has that concussion.  But company will do nicely.”

Clark glanced uneasily in the direction of the master bedroom. “Are you sure, Alfred?  I’ve never stayed over since…”

“Master Bruce has no objections to the two of you in this bedroom.  At least, I have not seen or heard any.  Have you?”

Dick shook his head and Clark said, “No.”

“Then it’s settled.  This is Master Dick’s home, too.” He went to another drawer and pulled out a pair of royal-blue pajamas. “I believe these are yours.  You should consider once again leaving some others here as well.” He put the pajamas on the chair and left.

For a moment, Clark and Dick stared at each other, then burst out laughing.

“Alfred always comes right out and says what he means.” Dick bit into a cookie.

“Very handy.  I like the direct approach.”

“What, no reading between the lines?”

“That’s all right sometimes, but certain things are too important to leave to interpretation.”

Clark remembered too many misunderstandings between him and Bruce, and he was determined not to make the same mistakes again.

Dick chewed thoughtfully. “It’s true, isn’t it?  A lot of problems could be avoided if people just told each other what they’re feeling.  Not all the time, mind you.  I mean, does anyone really want total honesty?  People say they do, but honesty sometimes hurts.”

Clark stood and began undressing. “Do you mean like when someone asks does this make my butt look big?”

Dick snickered. “No worries there, Big Blue.”

“Hey, you said ‘Big’.”

Dick laughed. “Rao, I love you.”

Clark felt warmth spread through him and he quickly finished undressing, then put on his pajamas, climbing into bed next to Dick.  He kissed him, gentle and loving.

“I love you, too,” he said softly, and Dick’s eyes sparkled.

Clark kissed the top of Dick’s head as he put his arms around him and snuggled with him in the comfortable bed, snatching a cookie off the nightstand.

& & & & & &

Bruce rested a hand on the newel as he prepared to climb the staircase.  Alfred came out of the kitchen and said, “Oh, good to see you, sir.”

“How’s Dick?”

“He seems well.  Master Clark will be staying to make sure he doesn’t fall asleep.”

“Oh.” Bruce pulled his robe around closer. “I was willing to do that.”

“Ah, yes, but unless there is an emergency to which Superman must attend, Master Clark is the logical choice, is he not?”

“Certainly.”

Bruce’s eyes were shadowed, and he missed the sudden sympathy in his old friend’s eyes.

“Good night, Alfred.”

“You will be stopping in to check on Master Dick, sir?”

Bruce smiled slightly. “Somehow I think that will be awkward.”

“There can be no acrobatics, sir.  Not with Master Dick’s concussion or what we suspect is one.”

“Still, I think that they would rather I not intrude.”

Bruce headed up the stairs while Alfred shook his head.

Upstairs, Bruce paused outside his room, hearing laughter coming from Dick’s room.  Sadness passed over his face and he entered his own room, closing the door quietly behind him.
