Author’s Notes: This story was written during a period earlier in the year when I was dissatisfied with my writing and dumped most of it. This made the cut but I set it aside and came across it recently and decided to polish it up and post. It may become a series as I have some ideas, but we’ll see.
I was delighted that this story also fits the
2008 DCU Fic/Art Bondage Challenge and the
2008 Wonder Woman Fic/Art Calendar Challenge (August). Prompt: Sword. :)
Diana surveyed the city below her with satisfaction as she stood on the cliff. The wind blew, ruffling her dark hair, her tiara glittering. She clutched her sword and shield, her Amazon Warrior regalia glinting in the sun.
The classical Greek-style buildings of much of this Man’s World city were still mainly preserved with a few exceptions. The memorials, all built to honor men, were still beautiful works of art. She liked the simplicity of the Jefferson Memorial and the grandeur of the Lincoln Memorial. The memorials to various wars were damaged but not obliterated. Despite her contempt for the gender of the soldiers they named, she admired the courage of those soldiers.
Her armies were spread out before her, snuffing out the final resistance. Her mother would be pleased. Despite her own grievous wound that had sidelined her after an early battle, Hippolyta would be extremely satisfied at her daughter’s conquest.
The men of this world had fought long and hard, and some of the women, too. It had been for naught. When the void between the worlds had been opened, her Amazon race had returned to the world they had left after their first enslavement at the hands of Heracles and his men. The Amazons had trained and recruited for centuries, the Goddesses Aphrodite and Athena allowing them to fashion a new generation out of clay, Diana included. Their numbers were “as stars in the sky”, and now they had returned to spread the Amazon philosophy of strength and superiority, freeing women from the tyranny of men.
Diana looked up at the blaze of fire in the sky. Their allies, the Tamaranians, were worthy. The society was also a matriarchy and bound to liberate other females on the worlds they conquered.
As for the males…
Diana’s smile was predatory.
Among the men of this world had been exceptional specimens. The Kryptonian had been the biggest obstacle, but learning of his weakness had secured their victory over him. His companions, one dark, one bright, had also been conquered, their lack of superpowers made up for by cunning and guile and other skills. All that was left now was to see who would claim ownership when the spoils of war were distributed.
“Princess!”
Diana turned. “Yes, Donna?”
Her protégé smiled. “I have brought you the one you requested.”
Diana’s expression grew expectant as Donna disappeared behind the rocks and returned dragging a naked man by the chain attached to his golden collar. His skin was scraped and bruised and bloodied, but defiance blazed out of blue eyes the deep color of sapphires. Oh, yes, breaking this one would be a pleasure.
Diana stood regally as the man was forced to his knees in front of her, his wrists chained behind his back. Hair the color of the sun tumbled into his eyes. She grasped his chin, lifting his head up.
“Fair of face,” she said, then her eyes ran over the nude body “…and comely of form.” Her lips curved. “You will be my Prized Possession, Golden One.”
Anger rolled off him. “Surely you can’t mean that! Enslaving people is wrong…!” He gasped as Donna gripped his hair and yanked his head back.
“Oh, the women won’t be enslaved, my Pretty One.” Diana’s voice was like silk. “Your gender has enslaved women for centuries. It is time you learn the folly of that arrogance.”
She saw the fear that flickered in his eyes before he quickly covered it. Courage. She knew that from observing his skill as a pilot in the silver flying machines, but metal and circuits were no match for magically-enhanced griffins and pegasus. Nor could science ultimately prevail against Goddess-given weapons of sword and shield and crossbow, wielded by Amazons.
“It isn’t fair…”
The blow sent him sprawling onto his back, his chest heaving as anger clouded her vision. “Fair? Fair?” She used her boot to part his legs and stood between them, her sword hovering over his groin. “After all the misery and humiliation your kind inflicted upon my mother and sisters in the Bondage Times?” Her lip curled in contempt as her captive tried to focus his eyes. Blood trickled from his mouth and a bruise was already forming on his cheek. Her marks would be easily seen on this one. “Your world has treated women shamefully, my Possession. There are countries that practice barbarism against females even in this 21st century.”
“There are…countries like that…” he gasped, not daring to move. “But the United States isn’t like that…”
“True,” she replied. “But your society still practices barbarism of sorts. Rape, that weapon of male domination, is still visited upon your women all too often. And lesser things, such as lack of economic opportunity, still is part of it. A woman who performed the same work as a man received far less in payment. Does that sound fair to you, Golden One?”
“No,” he said quietly. “But to attack and enslave us…!”
Diana thrust her sword behind her toward the smoldering city. “Conquer this, the most powerful of all the countries on Earth, and the rest will soon fall.” Her smile was triumphant. “Have already fallen, or soon will.” She rested her sword tip on the ground. “There is a new world now, Golden One. It will be up to you whether you continue to live in it.”
She stepped over her new captive and said to Donna, “Place him with my other possessions in the caravan. Once the city is secured, I must make my victory entrance.”
“Yes, Princess.”
Diana walked away, supremely confident in her success. She liked the old-fashioned Greek-style mansion that overlooked the graves of the American dead. She would make her headquarters in the White House, but when she wanted a change of scenery, she would come to this Custis-Lee Mansion.
Diana paused at the grave of one of the former Chiefs of this nation. The Eternal Flame still burned. She would not snuff out the Holy Flame of a slain Chief, male or not. He had been buried with his wife, children, and brother, and had paid the ultimate sacrifice as leader of his people.
She gave the grave a measure of respect, saluting it by touching her sword to her forehead, then turned and walked away, her Amazons mounting their horses in preparation for the march into the city. She mounted her own horse and watched as Donna brought her new Possession to the caravan further down the line.
Sapphire eyes looked at her, a great sadness overwhelming even the defiance, and Diana felt a strange tightening in her stomach. She turned away and lifted her chin, raising her sword.
“Hola!” she cried, echoed by her sister Amazons as they began the march to the city, over the great bridge in view of the memorial to another slain Chief, their horses’ hooves clip-clopping over the stone.
It was a whole new world now, with new responsibilities, and perhaps a delicious golden-haired distraction in the whirlwind days ahead.
Diana, Princess of the conquering Amazons, daughter of Queen Hippolyta, marched into Washington on a golden autumn day.
