SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE

We flew by aircar. Despite myself, I was impressed. Asking questions kept my mind off how stunning Clark looked in his outfit.

The car landed in a field close to Wayne Manor.

I hid my relief that the Manor looked the same. Somehow glitz and glimmer just wouldn’t have worked.

My counterpart was proud of the ancestral manse.

I totally identified with that.

The front door opened.

“Alfred!” I stepped forward, pleasure at seeing the counterpart of my oldest friend.

He smiled. “Master Bruce,” he said smoothly.

Ever unflappable.

“And Master Clark?”

“Yes, Alfred.” Clark’s smile was blinding.

“Come in, gentlemen.”

The foyer was almost exactly the same: polished parquet floor, statuary in small alcoves, gleaming chandelier…

“This painting…it’s an exotic landscape,” I said, indicating a world of purples and reds.

“It is a work by Albar of Omicron Ceti III,” Alfred said. “Priceless.”

“Alfred, are they here yet?”

Dick bounded into the foyer, a huge smile lighting his face. He looked at Clark and me and ran toward his Bruce and Clark, the three of them hugging, Bruce kissing the top of the boy’s head.

I felt a sadness go through me. Lately I hadn’t shown Dick much affection at all, and like this boy, he thrived on it.

Bright eyes looked at me and my Clark curiously, his smile still bright. His clothes seemed to sparkle in unison, the bright red-yellow-and-green also soft velvet like our borrowed clothes.

My Clark spoke first. “Hello, Dick.” He smiled and held out his hand.

Dick beamed and took Clark’s hand, grinning as the Kryptonian pulled him into a hug, ruffling his hair.

When Dick was released, he looked expectantly at me.

He was so much like my little boy.

“Hello, Dick,” I said softly.

Dick took a step toward me, slightly hesitant. My heart broke.

I immediately swept him up into a hug.

He hugged back, warm and small against me.

I kissed the top of his head.

When I released him, his smile was blinding.

I felt completely at home. Clark was smiling at me. So was everyone else.

“Do you have the same Batcave?” I asked.

“We do,” Bruce answered. “Dick, will you show our guests down?”

“Sure.” Dick started to lead the way.

“I’ll be right there,” my Clark said. “Bruce, may I use your bathroom?”

“Certainly.”

I followed Dick, ribbons of light streaming out behind him.

Oh, my Dick would love it here.

A world of glitter would certainly excite him, I thought, walking through the grandfather clock and down the stone steps.

The Batcave was pretty much the same: computers, workbench, training area, hangars for the Batmobile and Batplane.

The difference lay in the design of the vehicles and computers. My fingers twitched to try out the latter.

“Would you like to see the computer first?”

“Yes.”

Excitement ran through my veins as Dick logged in.

The speed of the computer dazzled me, and the alien sites were fascinating. The languages made my head spin.

A picture of an alien wedding came on-screen.

“Two females,” I murmured.

“Yes.” Dick cocked his head. “Why does that surprise you?”

“Umm...same-sex relationships aren’t usually approved of in my time.”

Dick looked as shocked as Bruce and Clark had been.

“I’m…I’m sorry.”

He slid his hand over and gave mine a squeeze.

“It’s okay,” I said.

Inside, I was thinking, No, it isn’t.

I attempted a smile. “Things are getting better.” At least Dick looked better at the thought.

“Wow!”

I couldn’t help but smile at my Clark’s voice.

“This is fantastic, Bruce.”

“Thank you.”

I turned to see both Clarks and Bruce walking towards us.

“Clark, you’ve got to check out this computer,” I said.

We had a good time surfing this century’s version of the Internet, talking excitedly at dinner about the vast universe out there, far bigger than what we knew in our century.

“This is wonderful,” my Clark said. “Alfred, you really outdid yourself.”

“Thank you, sir.”

Of course Alfred seemed unruffled by serving duplicates of his own Bruce and Clark. No matter what time or place, Alfred never changed.

And that was a very good thing.

After dinner, it was time for patrol.

Bruce, Dick, and I had Gotham.

The two Clarks had Metropolis.

It promised to be a very interesting night.
