THE FRATERNITY

“So, ‘fess up. How’s life with an Angel?”

Steve grinned as he lifted his wineglass. “Never dull.”

Rossetti’s was a popular North End hang-out, packed during this lunch hour, the loud buzz of conversation and clack of silverware a pleasant backdrop. It was small, even cramped, but most restaurants in this part of town had limited space. What they lacked in space they more than made up for in authentic atmosphere and great food.

“Best Italian ever,” Greg declared, happily enjoying veal piccata.

“Seconded,” said Del, savoring spaghetti and meatballs with tomato sauce laced with crushed red pepper.

Steve grinned as he sampled his baked ziti. “The Princess approves of this place.”

“So you take her out to dinner like the rest of us peons?” Greg smirked as a burst of laughter came from another table.

“Sure. Wonder Woman loves good food.”

“Keeps up her Warrior strength, huh?”

“Actually, that’s true. She says that Amazons don’t eat like so many women here. A woman a size 3 astounds her.”

“Yeah, Amazons are more the buxom type.”

Steve set his wineglass down. “Amazons are beautiful.”

“She must be one helluva lay.”

Steve stifled his irritation at the crudeness. He had been part of the military all of his adult life and was used to it, but had never felt completely comfortable with the way some men talked about women, even before he’d met Diana.

“A gentleman doesn’t kiss and tell,” he said with a smile, hoping that would end the talk.

“So she makes love as well as war?”

Before Steve could answer, a new voice interjected, “I’d like those details myself.”

A tall, broad-shouldered redhead smiled as he clapped a hand on Greg’s shoulder. His African-American companion smirked as the silver wings on his jacket winked in the sunlight.

“Sully! Kraz! Pull up some chairs,” Greg invited.

The pilots drew up chairs from the next table that had just been vacated.

“Mmm, smells good,” Sully remarked.

Greg signaled for their waitress. “The best! Try the veal piccata.”

The newcomers ordered and after their waitress left, Greg said, “Steve, this is Major Jack Sullivan and Major Aaron Krazniak. Guys, Steve Trevor.”

Steve nodded and Sully’s green eyes sparkled. “So, Trevor, Tolliver was asking, love or war?”

“Both.”

Sully guffawed. “Not surprised.”

Del leaned forward eagerly. “Do they really worship Aphrodite?”

Steve smiled. “Yes, they do, among others.”

“Wow.” Del blinked. “What’s Paradise Island like?”

Steve sipped his wine. “The Amazons prefer that men stay off.” He couldn’t say the reason why: by Aphrodite’s Law, if the Amazons allowed a man to step foot on the island, they would lose their strength and immortality. As Diana had said dryly, “Mother considers letting everyone know a strategic blunder.”

Can’t blame her.

“That’s a shame. There must be wonderful architecture and artifacts there!”

“Not to mention all those scantily-clad Amazons,” Greg smirked.

“All just waitin’ for Greg-boy to ease their loneliness?” laughed Sully.

“If anyone can turn those lesbos back to normal, it’d be me.”

“Are they all lesbians?” Del asked Steve, a little wide-eyed.

“Most of them are. And, Greg, if you think you’d work your flyboy charm on them by feeding them a line, you can forget it.” Steve laughed. “They’d break you in two.”

Greg and Del exchanged glances while the waitress arrived with Sully and Kraz’s food. Greg asked, “What’s that like, being with a woman as strong as Superman?”

Steve leaned forward, drawing them in.

“It’s great.”

He leaned back and smiled, his colleagues blinking.

“C’mon, the straight dope,” Greg urged.

“It is the unvarnished truth.”

Greg snorted. “I know it’s kinky, Steve, but let’s be honest. How comfortable can you be?” The other men looked at Steve with interest.

“Wonder Woman wouldn’t hurt me, Greg.” Steve didn’t mention the bruises he frequently had after lovemaking. It wasn’t her fault. Fair skin and Amazon strength made it a fact of life, but not one that bothered him. “I’m really happy with her.”

“Hell, who wouldn’t be?” Sully asked as he took a forkful of veal. “I wish I had a looker like that as my girl.”

“That pole dancer not keeping you satisfied, Sully?” Greg smirked.

“She works my pole just fine.”

Greg grinned. “You’re missin’ out on the finest whores right outside of Edwards. The place is tacky, but the T & A can’t be beat.”

Steve concentrated on his food. He could say something about talking about women like this, but he knew it was a lost cause.

“So the cunt tried to rip me off…”

“Whoa!” Steve gestured with his fork. “This is a family restaurant, Greg.” He glanced at the two women sitting closest to them at the next table.

“Sorry, man.”

“Hey, you guys seen Hal lately?” Sully asked as he cut more veal.

Steve had just seen Hal last week on a JLA mission, but said, “A couple of months ago he swung by and we had lunch. He’s got a whole new series of tests lined up.”

“On the XJ-266?” Del asked eagerly.

“That’s the one.”

“Wow, I’d give my eyeteeth to test that baby.”

“Me, too.” Steve took another bite of ziti.

“I second that,” said Kraz as he twirled his spaghetti.

“Why aren’t you the test pilot for that baby, Steve? You’re as good as Hal.” Greg picked up his wineglass.

“I suppose it’s because Hal’s a full-time pilot. I’ve been working a lot in intelligence lately.”

“Because of Wonder Woman?”

Steve frowned. “What?”

“Because of her, you’re in Intel instead of devoting yourself to your first love: flying.”

“Military intel does help me aid Wonder Woman, but I like the work.” Steve snapped a breadstick in half.

“But you don’t love Intel.”

“I get to do both.”

Greg shook his head. “Steve, can’t you see what’s going on? Your infatuation with the Amazon Princess is hurting your career.”

Steve put down his breadstick. “What? Are you nuts? Wonder Woman is the best thing to ever happen to me, career and personal life!”

Greg made a placating motion with his hands. “Okay, okay, I’m sorry.” He flashed a toothy smile. “I’m sure the fringe benefits are fantastic.”

Steve laughed. “You have no idea.”

& & & & & &

When lunch was finished, Steve had to get back to the office, leaving his fellow pilots to enjoy coffee.

“Wow.” Sully swirled his cappuccino in its cup. “You were right, Greg.”

“About what?” asked Del, inhaling the rich aroma of his drink.

Greg ate an Italian powdered sugar cookie that had been set out for dessert. “That whatever stones Steve had are pretty much gone after dancing with the Amazon. A shame.”

“Why, because he works in Intel instead of flying?” asked Kraz.

“He’s still a good pilot,” Del said.

“A great pilot needs that edge, that chutzpah.” Greg shook his head. “Trevor’s been domesticated.”
