Author’s Notes: Yes, this is a Bruce/Jim series, though it will be pretty unusual ;) Bruce-as-The Angel Of Death is a character I created in
The Better Angels, a Clark/Bruce story I wrote last year. You need not have read that story to understand this one. And if ever a ‘verse fit…! ;)
As you can see by the chapter (first draft) completion date, I’ve had this one on the back burner for awhile. I finally worked out what I needed to (it was an Eureka! moment) so it’s time to post. :)
The entire series can be found
here. IV
OUT OF THE SHADOWS
The Shadows speak.

"City Of Darkness"
1941 C.E.
Jim grimaced at the sight of the body. Every bone had been broken, the clothes shredded. This was certainly a new one, even for Gotham.
Heart attacks were becoming frequent. Jim would bet that this body would yield the same cause of death, no matter how mutilated.
All criminals, all caught in the act of committing a crime.
Caught, because Jim was certain the Winged One was involved.
Winged One. Nightshade. Gotham’s Shadow.
All names given to this creature of the night by the press.
“Okay, get to it, boys.”
Jim left the coroner and forensics team to their work.
He walked through the alleys, the cruisers’ red police lights rotating on the crumbling brick walls. He clamped down on the urge for a cigarette. Funny how he’d quit over two decades ago and he could still crave a butt.
He stopped in an alley two blocks from the crime scene.
“Care to show yourself?”
He knew the Watcher was there.
The shadows remained silent.
Jim said no more. The Watcher now knew that Jim knew he was there.
That was enough for now.
& & & & & &
On the second night, Jim left the latest body in the Narrows and walked away a few blocks. His men were taking care of things.
“So, care to get in out of the dark?”
He heart thudded in his chest, listening.
He heard the rustle of silk.
Jim stayed still. He didn’t feel the need to keep his hand close to his gun, despite suspecting this creature was a murderer.
The shadows moved to the right of him, and he carefully turned.
He stifled a gasp.
The creature of the shadows wore a long, black cloak draped over him and showing only the tips of his boots. A black-gloved hand held an ebony-handled Sword, glittering with amethysts. The face was completely hidden by a hood, and magnificent jade wings flared out.
Just as the girl had described, and all the other witnesses.
Jim wondered why he wasn’t terrified.
“You’ve been watching things here in Gotham.”
“I have.”
The voice was raspy, as if it hurt to talk.
“Why?”
“I was sent here to observe.”
“And…?”
“To perform my Primary Quest.”
“Which is?”
“To take the souls whose Time has come.”
Jim suppressed a sigh. Another messianic serial killer.
“So you murdered those people found in the alleys and byways?”
“No.”
“No?”
The creature shook his head. "I do not murder. Their Time had come.”
Jim did sigh this time. “Give yourself up. I can get you help,” he said gently.
The creature’s cape fluttered as a slight breeze blew.
“I appreciate your offer from the goodness of your heart, James Gordon, but I have no need of it.
“Death comes to every man.”
Jim took a step forward. “Who are you?”
“The Angel Of Death.”
