LEX LUTHOR OF SMALLVILLE
Lex smiled at Clark’s astonishment. He was dressed in jeans and a light-blue cotton shirt, hiking boots on his feet. His hands were in his pockets and he looked relaxed.
And gorgeous.
“Lex! Um, hi.”
“Hi.” Lex’s smile touched Clark deep inside. “Can I come up on the porch?”
“Oh, yes, sure, please.”
Lex stepped up on the porch, leaning against the white railing. Clark sat in the swing.
“New fashion designer?”
Lex laughed. “I decided to walk over, and country roads aren’t made for Gucci loafers.”
“Have you re-opened the mansion?”
“Yes.”
Clark had occasionally wandered over there, sad at the abandonment of the property. While it was kept up by a hired landscaper, there was never anyone in residence.
Until now.
“That’s good.”
Lex smiled gently. “Got to get back to my roots.”
Clark laughed a little.
Lex really looked good. Clark hadn’t seen him since Lana’s funeral. They had exchanged a few e-mails since then, but it had been at least two years since their last communication.
“Nice afternoon,” Lex said as he gazed out at the fields. The breeze was warm, ruffling Clark’s hair. He always loved sitting in the sunlight. It made him feel better whenever he was tired or ill.
“The weather’s been real good.”
They fell silent, and Clark wished he could say something witty.
He was a better writer than talker.
“Clark, I want to try again.”
Startled, Clark looked up. “What?”
Lex was smiling a trifle sadly. “I haven’t really been happy since we broke up.”
“More like drifted apart.” Clark rubbed his knee, a little nervous gesture. “What happened to us, Lex?”
Lex’s sadness increased. “I don’t know, Clark.”
Clark bit his lip. “I don’t really feel comfortable in your world.”
“Well, I feel pretty comfortable in yours. Maybe we can compromise.”
Hope surged in Clark. “I’d really like that, Lex.”
Lex’s smile grew bright, and he sat next to Clark on the swing.
The day was bright, the birds were singing, and Clark felt his hope increase. The edges of his vision shimmered, and he shivered. Lex put his arm around his shoulders, and they swung in companionable silence, Clark stealing a glance at Lex’s profile.
He really looked at peace.
Maybe Smallville can help you this time around, Lex.
Clark relaxed as his lips curved into a smile.
