CLEX OF SMALLVILLE

Two Hours Earlier

Oliver looked at J’onn, despair in his eyes.

J’onn understood.

The cold, clinical room was silver-blue-and-white, reminding J’onn of the ruined Fortress. He walked over to one of the metal tubes dominating the room.

Inside, partially obscured by a cold mist, lay Clark.

Oliver stood on the other side of the tube.

“Nothing new?”

J’onn shook his head. He looked down at Clark.

Oliver gently caressed the glass surface of the tube.

“That special device to control the Traveler that my parents were killed for…it must be pretty powerful to keep Clark in this stasis the past two years.”

“Combined with the loss of Clark’s powers and the Arctic cold, he’s been affected by whatever energy that thing gave off. Certainly powerful enough to bring down the Fortress.”

Oliver’s eyes were troubled. “He’s asleep, or something close.”

J’onn nodded, pointing to a monitor. “His brainwaves indicate heavy dreaming.” He watched as the lines jumped on the machine.

Oliver’s finger stroked the glass above Clark’s face.

“I wonder what he’s dreaming about.”

J’onn didn’t answer. Dreams were intensely personal, and his telepathic powers couldn’t get through this strange stasis. A moment later he asked, “And what does Lex dream of, I wonder?”

Oliver’s finger stopped stroking and he walked over to the other tube.

“I could be flippant and say world conquest, but who knows? He’s so twisted…”

“It’s the meteor psychosis.” J’onn looked down at Lex. “His brainwaves have indicated a higher state of agitation than Clark, though Clark has experienced some distress, too.”

“Not pain?”

“I don’t think so. In Lex’s case, his psychosis could be causing him problems. Or maybe Clark’s dreams are just more relaxing.” J’onn hoped there was no pain for either man. “With your funding and my Martian scientific knowledge, we will find a cure.” He rested a hand on the glass, carefully refraining from saying ‘if’. “Until then, let’s hope their dreams are sweet.”

J’onn caught sadness on Oliver’s face. For just Clark, or Lex, too?

The two men left the room, dimming the lights before closing the door.

The monitors’ readings jumped slightly, a frown appearing on Clark’s face, then it smoothed out as both men’s brainwaves looped into perfect sync.
