CHOCOLATE TASTES

The booths of the The Chocolatiers of North America and Europe filled the Convention Center, every chocolate lover’s delight on display: milk, white, and dark. Molds in every conceivable shape. Samples to titillate the tongue.

And a giant chocolate fountain pouring out gleaming, creamy goodness, surrounded by giant chocolate sculptures. On a table in front of the fountain was set the chocolate mold of Wayne Manor.

“My, you and the Bat look pretty yummy,” said Batgirl, admiring the giant sculptures of the Dynamic Duo.

She and Robin were far up in the rafters, watching the convention activity below.

“We taste good, too,” Robin said smugly, smothering a yelp as Batgirl kicked his shin.

“And those specialty chocolates of Madame Freneau’s…” Batgirl trained her binoculars on the booth. “Wow! No wonder she’s had a brisk business all day!”

Robin blushed a little as he remembered the full variety. The woman certainly had imagination!

“I suppose Le Bat is fondest of dark chocolate.”

He grinned. “He loves that rich quality, but doesn’t mind a few sprinkles thrown in.”

“Pixie sprinkles?”

“You might say that.”

“So you like dark chocolate topping?”

If Robin didn’t have perfect balance, he would have fallen off the rafter.

“Oh, yes. I have dark chocolate tastes.”

“You like to taste dark chocolate.”

“I love the bittersweet flavor, but there’s a smooth creamy center inside.”

“Melts on the tongue?”

“Slides right down the throat.”

There was a flurry of activity as the Prince of Gotham arrived, sampling offered creations.

“Bruce seems to have an appreciation of fine chocolate,” Batgirl observed.

“He has a refined palate.”

Batgirl smiled and gently ran her gloved hand down Robin’s leg.

“He certainly does.”

Robin smiled.

Bruce enjoyed sampling the chocolates. He had always been thrilled when his father had brought home a box of the finest Belgian confections.

For years after his parents’ deaths, he had denied himself the treat, but Dick’s fondness for chocolate had gotten him back into the habit. He couldn’t let the boy only know American chocolate. He had to expose him to the best, and Dick hadn’t wanted to eat alone.

His beautiful Bird had brought so much richness into his life.

He allowed himself to enjoy the ambience of this convention, senses alert for Gotham’s newest villain to make an appearance.

“Outstanding exhibits, eh, Mr. Wayne?”

“Yes, Mayor Garcia.”

“We had a hard time convincing them to book their convention here. Gotham’s not exactly a peaceful city.”

Bruce smiled wryly. “Gotham is Gotham.”

“Your Manor looks delicious,” Garcia said playfully.

Bruce smiled genuinely this time. “Madame Freneau is a true artist.”

The lights winked out, a buzz of anxiety going through the crowd.

“Crazy Gotham!”

“Will we see the Penguin or the Riddler?”

“Maybe Catwoman?”

“How about the Chocolatier?”

The villain’s voice reverberated around the hall, and a spotlight flashed on the Chocolatier as she strutted on a catwalk.

“My associates will be collectin’ your delicious goodies. Please cooperate fully with them. Oh, and thank you for your flavorful contributions, darlin’s.”

A gang of men dressed in brown suits and domino masks appeared, circulating among the booths as another ring of men trained guns on the crowd.

Bruce studied the guns. Were they real, or did they shoot silk ribbons? He made no moves, counting on Batgirl and Robin.

The duo swung down and began knocking down the gangsters, aiming for the gunmen first. They kicked, punched, and danced their way through the robbers, some of the civilians helping out, a robber ending up in the chocolate fountain, coming up sputtering.

“And of course, the piece de resistance, Wayne Manor!” crowed the Chocolatier, and the lights went out again.

Cursing, Batgirl kicked one of the robbers in the groin. She ran down another man while Robin shot a grapple hook and flew up, grabbing a spotlight and turning it on.

The scene below was chaotic, but the robbers had grabbed everything they could, and the chocolate Wayne Manor was gone.

Batman appeared in the rafters. “Let’s go,” he said, and he and Robin were flying over Gotham.

Batman had seen the Chocolatier’s escape and they spotted her a block away. Batgirl ran out of the Convention Center and hopped onto her Batcycle, chasing the getaway car.

The Dynamic Duo were gaining, but then the Chocolatier opened up the distance between them again. She leaped down into an alley and they followed.

Batgirl had radioed her position and her father’s police officers had cornered the car, and the men had given up.

But there was no chocolate Wayne Manor to recover.

“Batman? Robin? Where are you? I can get to your location right away,” she transmitted.

No answer.

She tried again, and still nothing.

She pounded a gloved hand on her handlebar.

Where were Bruce and Dick?

Robin opened his eyes, groaning as he touched the back of his head. He was in some kind of room with smooth steel walls…he saw Batman, relief his first response, then shock.

He looked down at himself.

Except for domino mask and cowl, both were completely naked.
