Author’s Notes: It seems that I can’t write Bruce/Jim without it turning into a trilogy! ;) I was starting to revise the second part of my other trilogy,
Wings Of Darkness, but this plot bunny has been nibbling incessantly, so I finally gave in. When the Muses talk, I listen! Enjoy! :)
Written for my
2009 DCU Fic/Art Tabloids Challenge. :)

"POLICE BUSINESS"
Jim dressed in a fresh suit, glad that he had brought some clothes to keep here at the Manor and at the penthouse in town. He came down to breakfast, enjoyed the delicious meal of eggs and toast that Alfred served, noticing that the kitchen radio was silent.
“We’ll be deluged with the news about Master Wayne. I thought it would be a nice break to stay away from the media until your press conference.” Alfred spread strawberry jam on his toast.
“Good idea.” If he needed to know anything before the press conference, Montoya or Stephens would give him a call.
The ride to the hospital was too long for Jim, but once they got there they bypassed a throng of reporters around the entrance, Jim aware of a side door that they could use. He and Alfred rode the elevator up to the third floor and walked to the nurses’ station.
The nurses looked at Jim, their expressions odd, and he said, “I’d like to see Bruce Wayne.”
“Um, family only…” said one red-haired nurse.
Jim flashed his badge. “I need to see the patient. Police business.”
“Yeah, right,” muttered another nurse.
Alfred raised an eyebrow but the first nurse said, “Come with me.” She led them to the ICU, explaining, “He was moved from Recovery this morning. He’s still critical, but there have been no complications.”
She ushered them into a small room, Jim immediately seeking out Bruce.
He felt fear sweep over him at the fragility of his lover, looking small and pale in the bed, tubes hooked up to him and bandages swathing his chest.
“He’s been rather active,” remarked the nurse, her name tag reading Sylvia Pine. “Quite a few scars.”
“Yes, well, racing cars and climbing mountains…not a sedentary life,” Alfred said smoothly.
Sylvia shrugged but checked the I.V. and the monitor. “You may stay. Visiting hours start at 10:00, gentlemen, for future notice.”
“Thank you,” Jim said.
As soon as she left he went right to the bed, smoothing Bruce’s hair. “It’s okay, I’m here, Bruce.” He gently kissed his lover's brow.
& & & & & &
Jim and Alfred spoke quietly as they sat in chairs by the bed, Sylvia coming in periodically to check on Bruce’s vitals, and then Jim sighed. “I have to leave for that press conference. I’ll be back right after.”
“Of course, sir.” Alfred indicated the TV high on the wall. “I shall watch when the time comes.”
Jim smiled and left the room, walking by the nurses’ station and missing the looks thrown his way as he concentrated on what he was going to say for the reporters.
He slipped out of the hospital and hailed a cab on a side street, going in through the back of the GCPD.
Inside, the halls were swarming with people. He ducked into a small corridor that led up to his office.
Once in the safety of his office, he looked over the report again on his computer that Montoya had sent, then quickly wrote out some notes and headed down to the room where press conferences were held. He saw Montoya frantically waving from the audience and waved back, missing the look of frustration and impending doom on her face.
Television lights were set up, flashbulbs going off and cellphone cameras clicking. Jim arrived at the podium, Anthony Garcia giving him an awkward smile. Jim mentally shrugged. He wanted to get this conference over as quickly as possible and get back to Bruce.
“Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, for coming today. I’ll read a statement and then take questions.
“The Gotham City Police Department apprehended one Mr. Alan Bresky, who shot three people in the downtown area yesterday. He used a high-powered rifle and scope and was just fired from his job as a computer programmer with Wayne Tech for cause. He is under observation at Arkham Asylum right now and we will go forward if he is pronounced fit to stand trial.
“The victims are Ms. Rachel Montado, Mr. Jason Blaine, and Mr. Bruce Wayne.” Murmurs went up at the mention of Bruce’s name. “All are at Gotham General Hospital, but of course I can’t give out details of their conditions except to say all are in the ICU.” He should visit the other two when he went back. “Now, for questions…”
“Is it true that you and Bruce Wayne are lovers?” came a shout from the back of the room.
