2009 DCU Free_For_All Summer Challenge. Special Prompts: 1. Fourth of July and 2. Fireworks.
Batman swung through the crumbling neighborhood, clouds slowly dispersing in the night sky. The weather was cool, the last of the rain having departed in the early afternoon.
His senses were on alert, as always, but nothing stirred even in this crime-ridden section of the city.
Must be patriotic criminals, he thought with a snort.
Maybe he could call it an early night. Dick was partying with friends, one of his rare chances to be a normal teenager.
Batman sighed. He missed the kid.
He swung up to a rooftop, reeling in his line and listening to sounds in the alley below, but only a cat’s mewling could be heard. No furtive footsteps or whispers.
He gazed up at the stars, trying to ignore the heaviness in his heart.
Just like you to fall for someone who will never return your love, who’s as straight as an arrow.
But, to be honest, what would he do with that love if he got it back? Settle down and play house? With their crazy lives…
A loud bang! tensed his muscles, then he relaxed as he saw the explosion of fireworks over Wayne Park. Hundreds of Gothamites would be there to celebrate and ooh and aah over the display on this Fourth of July night, and could probably do so safely. All the nutcases were currently accounted for in Arkham or Blackgate.
He watched as the bright colors burst against the velvety backdrop of the night sky, sparks flying as the cannons boomed. He and his parents had always sat out on the lawn of the Manor, watching the fireworks from their vantage point high on the hill.
He rubbed his chest as if he could erase the ache deep inside, and suddenly was swooped up into the sky.
“Wha…!”
“Just me, Batman.”
“Superman, what the fuck? Put me down!”
The Kryptonian’s grin lit up his face. “I want to take you on a magical mystery tour.”
“Okay, Paul McCartney,” Batman answered sarcastically.
They flew up into the clouds and then down again, Batman gasping as they traveled through showers of sparks.
Batman watched in awed fascination as they flew leisurely through the fireworks, heat and light touching Batman’s skin but Superman wouldn’t let him be hurt. They looped slowly through the sky, explosions everywhere, red-white-and-blue bouquets of light blooming as a golden rose opened slowly, falling back to earth with a slight crackle.
They flew in a spiral dance, free and easy, and the wind blew gently, the sparkling fireworks reflected in Clark’s eyes as he smiled at Bruce, showers of golden sparkles glittering in his hair. Bruce wanted to touch it.
“Go ahead.”
Startled, Bruce saw what was in Clark’s eyes, his own heart pounding. Could it be…?
He removed his glove and with a trembling hand, touched a sparkle in Clark’s soft hair. Clark kissed him, and Bruce entwined his limbs around his Kryptonian as a rocket shot up, up, and away and exploded, purple stars slowly blooming into a bat, red-white-and-blue stars and golden and red roses with green leaves exploding one-by-one (and was that a tiny bird of the same color sparkling brightly?), and a red-yellow-and-blue symbol of the House of El blossomed, showering the lovers as they slowly turned around and around, capes swirling as they danced among the stars, the earth shuddering beneath them.

Down below, Jim Gordon smiled.
He clapped the master of fireworks on the shoulder. “Glad you could get both symbols up there, Lou.”
The wiry man laughed. “My pleasure, Commish.”
“Really great job, Commissioner.”
Jim turned and smiled. “Those fireworks you provided were just the thing, Robin.”
The Teen Wonder’s smile rivaled the fireworks. “I think the World’s Finest will be able to provide their own from now on.”
The three men watched as the World’s Finest shot off into the sky, trailing glittering light that slowly fell to earth.
