Author’s Notes: This story was inspired by Mary Renault’s The Persian Boy. Alexander the Great’s men accepted their leader’s indulgence, who happened to be Bagoas, the Persian Boy, an ex-slave who shared Alexander’s bed. They didn’t object to him being male but that he was a barbarian (non-Greek). It showed their love and respect for Alexander when they accepted Bagoas, and learned to respect him in his own right.
Canon is a jumping-off point but I changed several things, including the survival of Johnny’s gang, as their dynamic was important to this story.
Mostly this is drama with elements of romance, so I said what the heck and included that in the Genre. :)
Yeah, this was going to be a one-shot, albeit a long one, but the boys were just too much fun to play with. ;)
So, enjoy this story of seduction, sex, and a touch of Stockholm Syndrome. ;)

BLOOD, SILVER’D

Blood,
Silver’d,
In the
Quiet woods,
Glistening,
With hopes
Crushed.

April 1934

Mel’s heart pounded, adrenaline pushing him on as he aimed for the flash in the window of the Little Bohemia Lodge. The rat-a-tat-tat of machine guns pierced the frosty night air as gangsters and G-Men fought with ferocious zeal and desperation.

Flashes of light nearly blinded him as bullets tore into trees, chips of wood flying and the sound of machine guns nearly deafening.

Mel ran up to the car that he and his men had fired on as the occupants had tried to get away. The windows were shattered and one of the men dead, the smell of blood sickly-sweet.

“Don’t shoot!” cried out another man.

“Get down on the floor!”

Mel couldn’t get close to the lodge and ran back to the trees. He shot off a few more rounds and quickly changed his clip, firing again.

“Someone’s gotten away!” yelled Carter Baum.

“Is it Dillinger?” Mel yelled back.

“I think so!”

“Take the car and cut him off around the woods!”

Carter took off.

Mel kept shooting and said to Winstead, “Keep firing.” He ran off through the woods, stumbling over rocks and exposed tree roots. The moon’s silver rays gave him enough light to see by, but it was a close thing.

Blood roared in his ears as he panted, trying desperately to catch sight of his quarry. A cool breeze blew over his skin as his breath came out in little puffs in the cold air, the smell of pine and spruce strong.

A staccato burst of gunfire lit up the area by the road. Heart in his mouth, he thought, Carter! as he ran faster.

He scrambled down the incline, nearly taking a header, and his heart almost stopped as he saw a huddled figure at the bottom of the hillock.

“Carter!”

Blood was silvered by the moon all over his friend’s face and clothes.

Mel gently put a hand on Carter’s forehead. “Was it Dillinger?”

“N…Nelson.”

Sorrow and rage welled up in Mel, thinking of another agent brutally murdered by that mad dog killer, and Carter…he felt his gut twist with the pain of impending loss.

“Hold on, Carter.” He screamed for help and ran off toward the road.

He tripped over one of the numerous tree roots and fell hard, cutting the palm of his right hand and knee, his gun flying out of his grip. He lunged for it and a hand stopped him.

He looked up and saw the surprised face of John Dillinger just before everything exploded into stars.
