Author’s Notes: This story was inspired by Mary Renault’s The Persian Boy. Alexander the Great’s men accepted their leader’s indulgence, who happened to be Bagoas, the Persian Boy, an ex-slave who shared Alexander’s bed. They didn’t object to him being male but that he was a barbarian (non-Greek). It showed their love and respect for Alexander when they accepted Bagoas, and learned to respect him in his own right.
Canon is a jumping-off point but I changed several things, including the survival of Johnny’s gang, as their dynamic was important to this story.
Mostly this is drama with elements of romance, so I said what the heck and included that in the Genre. :)
Yeah, this was going to be a one-shot, albeit a long one, but the boys were just too much fun to play with. ;)
So, enjoy this story of seduction, sex, and a touch of Stockholm Syndrome. ;)

Throbbing pain was the first thing he was aware of as Mel swam up to consciousness. His stomach was roiling as he tried to remember…
Forcing his eyes open, he saw a room with pinewood paneling, a framed painting of a mountain lakeside scene catching his blurred vision.
He was lying stretched out on a bed? There was a pillow under his head. Two, in fact.
He winced and started to reach up to touch his head, the sound of chains rattling loud in his ears.
Suddenly he noticed the man leaning against the wall, arms crossed and a rakish smile on his face.
“So you’re awake, Sleeping Beauty?”
Mel saw the silver handcuffs on his wrists, long chain links trailing up toward the headboard. His right hand and knee hurt. A strip of gauze was tied around his hand.
Johnny Dillinger pushed away from the wall, moving toward the bed. Lean and graceful, strands of chestnut hair fell into hazel eyes. He poured water from a silver pitcher on the bedside table into a glass. He put his hand on the back of Mel’s head, helping him drink.
“Thank you.”
Johnny set the glass back on the nightstand. “Feel better?”
“A little.” Mel tried to focus on Johnny’s face. “What…where am I?”
“Well, I can’t tell you that, Agent Purty.”
Amusement laced the gangster’s voice. He sat on the edge of the bed.
“I was…at Little Bohemia…” His head hurt badly. “Carter…” he moaned.
“…is out of surgery and holding his own.” Johnny rested a hand on Mel’s leg. “I called the hospital.”
Mel looked at him. “Thank God.” He closed his eyes. He hoped that Carter wasn’t permanently disabled.
Puzzlement was his next emotion. Why…? He opened his eyes, looking directly into Johnny’s gaze.
“Why am I here?”
“You’re insurance, Agent Purty.” Johnny smirked. “Your boys are getting too close.”
Melvin tried to make sense of all this. He wished his headache would go away.
“You’d better rest.” Johnny squeezed his leg and stood up.
“I guess it wouldn’t do me any good to say you’re under arrest.”
Johnny laughed. “You’ve got a sense of humor, Agent Purty. I like that. I’ll be back in a little while.” He left the room, closing the door behind him.
Mel looked around. The pine walls indicated a cabin or cottage, and he could hear birds singing outside his shuttered window. They were out in the country, then. Close to Little Bohemia, or several hours away?
At least the bed was comfortable. He saw a dresser, and a rocking chair in the corner. Another painting showed a winter scene, trees covered in snow as stars glittered in the night sky.
He was wearing his shirt and pants, and his coat, hat, and shoes were removed. His hand and knee were both bandaged, both still painful.
He tugged on the chains, surprised that the chain lengths were long enough to allow him to move his arms comfortably, but he was firmly tied to the bed.
He’d have to figure out how to escape, but his headache was still pounding, his thoughts chaotic.
He fell asleep, exhausted in body and mind.
& & & & & &
When he awoke next, Johnny Dillinger was sitting by the bed in the rocking chair.
“Ah, good, you’re awake. How about a trip to the bathroom?”
His bladder was painfully full. “Yes.”
Johnny stood up. “Gotta warn ya, if you try something, I’ll have to knock you down.”
Johnny unlocked the other end of the handcuffs and helped Mel off the bed. Mel stumbled and Johnny caught him, the agent leaning heavily on Johnny.
They left the room, walking down a short corridor to the bathroom. Johnny left him alone to do his business, then escorted him back to his room, Mel catching a glimpse of the kitchen and a sitting room.
“The boys are out right now.” Johnny re-attached the chain links to the headboard. “You like ham-and-cheese?”
Mel nodded and gratefully took the sandwich that Johnny brought back from the kitchen. Johnny put a bottle of Coke on the nightstand.
Mel was ravenous, devouring the sandwich, washing it down with the Coke.
“I thought you didn’t kidnap?” he asked.
Johnny looked perfectly relaxed in the rocking chair, but Mel saw the alertness in his eyes.
“I don’t. You’re a hostage to fortune, my dear Purvis. My fortune.”
“Not much of a fortune. I doubt that the Government would pay much for me.”
Johnny laughed.
Mel remembered the time he had visited Johnny in jail in Arizona. He remembered the feeling of being drawn to those eyes, electricity crackling between them, the handsome gangster’s gaze raking him up and down…
…just like he was doing now.
His mouth suddenly went dry. Forcing himself to stop shaking, he lifted the Coke bottle to his lips and drank.
He could feel those eyes on him.
Lowering the bottle, he watched as Johnny climbed onto the bed, leaning forward…
“And what if I don’t want this, Mr. Dillinger?”
“You will.” Johnny smirked.
“And if I don’t?” Liar!
Johnny froze, then set back on his heels. “I don’t rape,” he said flatly.
Mel set the bottle down on the nightstand, biting his lip.
Johnny settled cross-legged on the bed, his expression contemplative. Making a decision, he started to talk.
“I know what rape is.” He loosely clasped his hands together. “I learned that the first night in Indiana State Prison. I was young, pretty, and a fresh chicken. I fought, but I lost.”
Mel felt his stomach clench in horror, fighting to keep the pity out of his eyes. This man would not want pity.
“Just like the next night, and the next, and then Dalton passed me around for packs of smokes until Walter Dietrich faced him down and claimed me.” Johnny’s fingers tightened slightly. “He had a lover, and wasn’t a rapist, anyway. He had to keep up appearances, but he would have left me alone. I was okay with that, but I saw Walter and Pete together and wanted to learn what it was like when someone cared, instead of treating me like a piece of meat.” Johnny smiled. “I found I liked it. I had ten years to serve, and I didn’t want to be celibate or just use my right hand. So when new chickens came in, I claimed them, partly to keep them safe, and gave ‘em the option of sharing my bed or not.” His smile was smug. “Most did.”
Mel congratulated himself for keeping a steady voice. “Doesn’t your girl object to your…tastes?”
Johnny laughed. “She knows what’s what. She doesn’t hold it against me. I was in prison a long time.”
Mel felt his heart rate increase as Johnny leaned forward, lips inches from his own.
“You’ve got that option, too, Agent Purty.” His lips brushed Mel’s ear as he whispered, “I like ‘em dark and beautiful.”
Johnny pulled back, stroking Mel’s hair, and rose from the bed. He closed the door softly behind him, and left a dazed Mel behind.
