Author’s Notes: This story was inspired by Mary Renault’s The Persian Boy. Alexander the Great’s men accepted their leader’s indulgence, who happened to be Bagoas, the Persian Boy, an ex-slave who shared Alexander’s bed. They didn’t object to him being male but that he was a barbarian (non-Greek). It showed their love and respect for Alexander when they accepted Bagoas, and learned to respect him in his own right.
Canon is a jumping-off point but I changed several things, including the survival of Johnny’s gang, as their dynamic was important to this story.
Mostly this is drama with elements of romance, so I said what the heck and included that in the Genre. :)
Yeah, this was going to be a one-shot, albeit a long one, but the boys were just too much fun to play with. ;)
So, enjoy this story of seduction, sex, and a touch of Stockholm Syndrome. ;)

"Unspoken"
1934 C.E.
September 1936
Melvin Purvis entered his house, thoroughly exhausted. He threw his coat on a chair and placed his fedora on the endtable. Rubbing the back of his neck, he sank into the overstuffed chair by the radio.
Yet another potential job sabotaged by Hoover.
How had he ever though highly of that man?
He rubbed his eyes, wincing at the memory of that final meeting in the Director’s office over a year ago. His skin crawled as he remembered Hoover’s hands on him, and the offer to keep his job with certain…duties…attached.
No, thanks, Mr. Hoover.
After being released by Johnny, he had been picked up on the main road, his return a cause celebre. He had been restored to his old job, everyone expecting him to go after the Dillinger Gang with vengeful zeal, but he didn’t have the heart to do that anymore.
Hoover had been highly critical of Mel, emphasizing his good treatment in captivity, considering it suspicious. Mel had successfully caught other gangsters, but never could find Johnny.
His gang had pulled off a bank job in Oklahoma a week after releasing Mel, then another in New Mexico, and finally a train robbery in Illinois in July of 1934.
He and his gang had disappeared after that robbery, netting a cool two million dollars.
Mel kept his eyes closed. Sadness washed over him at the thought of Billie Frechette, captured before the train robbery and sentenced to two years in jail. She’d died in a prison riot a year ago, just before he’d resigned from the Bureau, now the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
And where was Johnny now?
Far away, I hope. Far away and safe.
Mel sighed. His dreams of a judgeship were dead. Hoover would see to that.
Mel’s success had guaranteed Hoover’s jealousy of all the media attention. His rejection of the offer to keep his job and all that it entailed had sealed his fate.
Thank God for his trust fund.
Everything he had feared had come true: less zeal for the job, Hoover’s suspicions, the loss of…he shied away from his last thought. He didn’t even have the friendship of Carter Baum on a daily basis as he’d had before. Carter was on permanent disability and had returned home to New York. There were phone calls and letters, but Mel had felt increasingly isolated, Doris Rogers his only human contact at the office. The ex-Texas Rangers had gone back to Austin, so Charles Winstead, more mentor than surbordinate, had left him, too.
Bone-weary, he turned on the radio and listened to the National Philharmonic, then ate a light supper. His cupboards were nearly bare, but he really had no great desire to replenish them. He had little appetite these days.
He suddenly thought of the chocolates that Johnny had given him. There had still been a few in the box he’d left behind when he had left the cabin. He hadn’t eaten Belgian chocolates since then.
His life had changed forever in that little cabin in the woods.
Dusk fell, stars twinkling in a purple twilight. Mel went to bed early, weary in body and soul.
& & & & & &
Mel stirred awake, stiffening as he felt someone in bed behind him as he lay curled up on his side.
“Hey, Agent Purty.”
Immediately he relaxed as strong arms encircled him. Lips nuzzled his ear.
“It’s been awhile, Beautiful.”
Mel’s heart fluttered. “It has.” He could smell Johnny’s distinctive cologne and strawberry-scented shampoo. He covered the hand around his midriff with his own. “You were busy for awhile.”
Light laughter. “Yes, I was.” Johnny nuzzled his neck. “Looks like you and me will have to get kinky, darlin’. I’m not sure if I feel comfortable with you in bed without chains.”
Mel laughed.
“Come away with me,” was whispered in his ear. “I can show you a life unlike any you’ve ever known.” Warm lips brushed his bare shoulder. “Say yes, Sunshine.”
A little shower of Belgian dark chocolates rained over his shoulder onto the sheets.
A little smile appeared on Mel’s face and he rolled over to meet Johnny’s sparkling eyes. He was blond now but still had the same lopsided smile.
“Yes.”
Johnny’s smile lit up the starlit night.
They didn’t have only now.
Now they had forever.

I feel guilty about fridging Billie like that, but she will have her day in the
Triptych Series, never fear! And she will be mentioned when this series is continued. I just wanted to explore the boys’ relationship one-on-one in this particular ‘verse.
