Author’s Note: I apologize for the unfinished quality of this story fragment. I’m not sure if I’ll be incorporating this into a longer story or not. Hey, it’s been over a week since I posted any fic! My Muses are getting a little snarky. :) Also, as summer is rapidly approaching, I’m shifting over to beach mode. So you might see this fragment again within a larger framework, or maybe it’ll just kinda lay here like a fish flopping on the sand. LOL! Again, apologies for the unfinished raggedyness of this. Blame my cold! *sniffles*
Bruce lay on his blanket on the sand, the sounds of the ocean eternal as the tide came in and went out, the water crackling over small stones and shells as it slipped up toward him, then pulled back still several yards away to start the whole process all over again, the undertow rippling its protest. His eyes were closed and shaded by his sunglasses, his senses reduced to four: he could hear the cry of gulls wheeling over the sea and the lighthouse horn off in the distance, smell the sea air and taste its salty tang while feeling the grittiness under his fingers as he dug into the warm sand.
He could hear splashing, then a shaded coolness blocked out the heat momentarily over part of his body. He opened his eyes, squinting against the sun, then it too was blocked and he saw Clark, a nimbus of sunlight around his head, tousled hair wet and gleaming as tiny diamonds starred his bare torso.
“Have a nice swim?” Bruce asked, fingers now lazily tracing circles in the sand. It was hard to concentrate when a god had just risen from the sea.
But then, he seemed to have a lot of trouble concentrating lately.
“Very nice.” Clark moved to sit on his blanket and Bruce closed his eyes again. There was a faint air of suntan lotion on Bruce’s skin, which of course was unnecessary for Clark, whose skin yearned for the sun.
Anyone who literally bathes in the sun doesn’t need sunblock!
Bruce’s amusement showed on his face.
“What’s so funny?”
“I’m thinking that you were made for the beach.” A wave of the hand. "All this...light."
Clark chuckled. “It’s certainly different from the lakes I was used to back in Kansas.”
“Mmm, no doubt.” Bruce thought of all the aquamarine seas and white beaches he’d visited in the Caribbean and Pacific but preferred the sand that glittered with tiny mica chips here and the rocky coastline. Clark had sniffed and said, “Figures you’d go for the snippy Atlantic over the glassine seas of the tropics.”
Bruce felt completely relaxed and looked forward to a lobster dinner tonight.
“Any headaches?”
“No.”
“Good.” He could hear Clark stretch out on his blanket. “Dick called. He and Roy will be here on Thursday, barring any Teen Titans’ emergencies.”
“Good.” A frown. “What day is…?”
“It’s Tuesday, Bruce.”
A breeze sprang up and the smell of the sea tickled his nose.
Clark’s hand slid over and grasped his fingers in a comforting hold.
