CROSSED SWORDS

Diana clamped down on her anger. “He is a part of me, Mother. He is my soulmate.”

Hippolyta turned to face Diana, eyes glittering.

“We shall see.”

“Yes, we shall.”

The Queen imperiously swept by Diana to return to a terse living room.

Steve had set the table and was taking an inventory of what he could make for breakfast while Medea and Artemis stood like mute sentinels flanking the glass doors to the patio. They stood a little straighter as the Queen came into the living room, followed by an exasperated Diana.

“Your Highness, what would you like for breakfast?”

“Thank you, Major, but my Warriors and I will partake at our Consulate. Come, Sisters.”

The three Amazons left, Steve wearing a distressed expression. Diana hurried over to him and put a hand to the side of his face.

“Well, that went well,” Steve said wryly.

“I am sorry, my love.”

He took her hand and kissed it. “Not your fault, Angel. I’m just not the right gender.”

Diana pulled him into a kiss.

The Consulate was decorated in Amazon artwork, Wonder Woman admiring its beauty. The Embassy in Washington was far more elaborate, but the Amazons had chosen to maintain a Consulate in Boston, the Athens of America, due to the Atheneum and the groundbreaking scholarship of Professor Helena Karpetitis.

Wonderfully convenient.

The Amazon guards at the entrance nodded to their Princess. Usually the guards were the regular Man’s World staff, but her mother had brought a full retinue to America.

Diana kept a regal smile on her face. She had been trained since birth to keep up appearances, especially royal ones, and she used it to keep her true feelings buried deeply, safe from prying eyes.

Because she was still furious with her mother. She understood her mother and sisters’ disdain for men. Being tricked and enslaved by Hercules and his men had been a nightmare, and Diana had no illusions about what some men were capable of, but that was some men.

It wasn’t her Steve.

Diana’s boots echoed on the polished floor as she passed gilt-edged mirrors and priceless paintings and statues.

The reception area was tastefully decorated with elegant yet comfortable furniture, deep-blue trimmed in gold, a loveseat and single chair arranged around a glass table, a fire crackling in the fireplace. Blue velvet drapes were tied back with gold ropes, framing a window overlooking an ornate garden.

“Would you like some refreshments, Princess?”

“No, I will wait for lunch. Unless my mother is too busy to meet with me?”

“Never, Princess.” The young secretary smiled.

Diana continued to wait, walking around the room, pausing at the window.

“Beautiful gardens, aren’t they?”

Diana turned. “Very. Thank you for inviting me, Mother.”

Hippolyta took Diana’s hands and kissed her cheek. “I am glad nothing of importance kept you away.” The Queen’s crown sparkled as a shaft of sunlight hit it, and she smiled.

Diana’s heart ached. She disliked being at odds with her mother. Their closeness was special to her.

However, she was not going to back down on Steve. He deserved her loyalty.

“Let us go to luncheon, then.”

Diana followed her mother to a small outdoor patio overlooking the lush gardens.

“What a lovely spot.”

“Yes, I am pleased at the staff’s expertise. They have taken our directions and implemented them successfully.”

Hippolyta poured herbal tea from a china teapot painted with a yellow sprigged-rose pattern.

“Mmm, delicious tea.”

“I agree.” Hippolyta put down the teapot. “And these cakes are pure nirvana.”

Diana smiled, taking a pink-frosted cupcake from the plate.

“Mother, I love seeing you, but this stopover was supposed to allow you to meet Steve.”

“I met him.”

“To spend time with him.”

Hippolyta sighed. “Diana, I met your pilot. He is a fine figure of a man, fair of face and hair like the sun. But I have no further interest in learning more.”

“Why not?”

“My darling, you know my feelings about this liaison.”

“It is not a mere liaison, Mother. I will not be taking my pleasure and then taking my leave.”

“A pity.”

Anger sparked in Diana’s eyes. “You are being unreasonable! I work with men all the time: Superman, Batman, Green Lantern…”

“None of them are your paramours.”

Irritated at her mother’s inflection on the word ‘paramour’, making it sound like a dirty word, Diana snapped, “Steve is my soulmate, Mother.”

A reflection of Diana’s anger sparked in Hippolyta’s eyes. “This deviancy must stop, Diana.”

“I am afraid this deviancy, as you call it, will continue. You know how I feel.”

Sadness entered Hippolyta’s eyes. “You betray your heritage, Daughter.”

“Mother…”

The Queen shook her head sharply. “You are the Crown Princess, Diana! You are my heir. How does it look to carry on with a man in defiance of my wishes?”

“Mother, an Amazon’s heritage is love.”

“Of all people, yes, but when it comes to a mate, you should know better, considering our history.”

It was Diana’s turn to be sad. “Mother, my heart knows no history. I honor our history and grieve for you and all who suffered by Heracles’ betrayal, but Steve is not Heracles. He is a good and decent man, respectful of women, and with the heart of a lion.”

Hippolyta sighed. “Very well.” She signaled for their lunch to be brought in. “I shall come to dinner tonight.”

“Thank you.”

After lunch, Diana immediately called Steve to let him know so that he could prepare.

She would help him in any way that she could.
