Title: Crystal Rain Book I: Whatever Happened To Melvin Purvis? (15/19)
Author: BradyGirl_12
Pairings/Characters (this chapter): Teddy/Chuck, Steven Cawley, Jeremiah Naehring, Mike McPherson
Series Notes: My notes grew too voluminous for the header, so you can find them in a separate entry here.
Fandoms: Public Enemies/Shutter Island
Genres: Angst, AU, Drama, Hurt/Comfort, Mystery
Rating (this chapter): R
Warnings (this chapter): Holocaust imagery
Spoilers: For Shutter Island, some scenes were tailored by me to fit this story. Nothing in this story references the major plot twist of the book or movie. I used the same settings and characters, but in a very AU way. For Public Enemies, nothing except for the ultimate fate of John Dillinger, and that’s historical fact, anyway.
General Summary: U.S. Marshals Teddy Daniels and Chuck Aule are sent to Shutter Island on a unique assignment, and while there, discover shocking answers to a decades-old mystery.
Chapter Summary: Can Teddy and Chuck bring Johnny back to Mel?
Date Of Completion: April 17, 2010
Date Of Posting: June 28, 2010
Disclaimer: I don’t own ‘em, Dennis Lehane, Paramount and Universal do, more’s the pity.
Word Count: 885
Feedback welcome and appreciated.
Author’s Notes: This is a story that started running through my head as soon as I left the theater after my first viewing. Like the patients on Shutter Island, I can’t escape! ;)
The entire series can be found here.

SAFE

When all around me
Is dark and dangerous,
Wisps of menace
Curling ‘round my heart,
You are there,
My refuge,
My sanctuary,
My hope.

“The steaks are Grade-A, Doc.” Teddy savored a juicy piece.

Cawley smiled. “We are proud of our menu at all times.”

“Well, most of the time,” snorted Naehring.

Cawley laughed. “Jeremiah is referring to the times when our stores have been low and we’ve been forced to eat Government rations.”

Chuck shuddered. “Trust me, we know about K-rations.”

Chuckles went around the table.

“Is everything getting back to normal?” Teddy asked.

“Pretty much. We must continue the clean-up, of course, but all the patients are where they should be.”

A knock on the door interrupted conversation. Deputy Warden McPherson came into the room. “Dr. Naehring, Nurse Keller needs to see you.”

“All right. Hopefully it will not take long.”

Chuck sipped his ginger ale. This steak could use a really good red wine, but he didn’t feel right about drinking wine when Teddy was trying so hard to stay on the wagon. Teddy’s hard drinking had gotten him into trouble before, and Chuck wanted to support him.

“Dr. Cawley, I was thinking about the Parker/Mellinger case and was interested in seeing Jack Mellinger since I’d already met Mel Parker, but I’ve been told he’s in Ward C.” Teddy cut a piece of steak. “I didn’t know he was so violent.”

Cawley looked uncomfortable. “Dr. Naehring recommended his transfer after an incident with one of our other patients, George Noyes. I don’t feel that he should remain there long, but sometimes patients need to be placed in different circumstances, and there aren’t many options here.”

“Will you be transferring him back?”

“I believe I shall in the morning.”

Chuck was a little surprised at how easy getting Johnny back had been. He and Teddy exchanged smiles as Naehring came back to join them twenty minutes later.

“How is Rachel, Doc?” Chuck asked.

“Coming close to the end, I am afraid. She will be sedated throughout the night, but tomorrow…”

“We’ll stay with her,” Teddy said.

“Such a waste.” Naehring shook his head. “A brilliant doctor, laid low by the very thing she treated.”

“Some things just can’t be cured.”

“Some things.” Naehring’s gray eyes glinted.

Chuck could see the answering glint in Teddy’s blue eyes.

& & & & & &

“We did it.” Chuck couldn’t help smiling as he and Teddy walked down the hall to their room.

“We sure did. Johnny’ll be back with Mel before you know it.”

Chuck loosened his tie as they entered the room. “He’ll probably be ecstatic to get out of that hellhole. Can’t feel too safe over there.” He rummaged in his suitcase. “Wanna play some cards?”

“Sounds good, but not too late. We better turn in early. We’ll have to stick close to Rachel if she’s really on death’s door.” Teddy took the pack of cards that Chuck handed him. “He’ll feel a lot safer here with Mel, as crazy as Ward A is.”

They got comfortable by removing their suit jackets and ties and played gin, each one winning a game, then Teddy whipped off a string of three.

“No fair,” grumbled Chuck.

“Aw, buddy, don’t be so grumpy. I’m just a superior card player.” Chuck rolled his eyes as Teddy laughed.

After the games, they got ready for bed, settling in comfortably. Quickly, Chuck fell asleep, Teddy curling up behind him as he pulled the blankets up higher. The radiator hissed but it was a cold night, and Teddy was drawn to the warmth of his partner.

He could smell Chuck’s aftershave, and the faint scent of the shampoo he’d used. He breathed in both scents deeply, feeling himself relax. He always felt safe with Chuck.

Chuck was a great match. Their backgrounds were well-suited to each other: both Army combat veterans who had hit the beach at Normandy, and had fought their way across Europe. When they had met in December of 1944, the snow had begun to fall in the Ardennes, and the German panzers had begun to roll, the last gasp of Nazi Germany that was bloody and desperate.

Their New England roots served them well. If one of them spoke about drinking tonic, the other knew that he was talking about soda, not the stuff that men put on their hair.

They worked well together as U.S. Marshals, always watching each other’s backs. Chuck was someone he could rely on completely.

Chuck’s smiles soothed the sore spots inside him, the bleeding wounds drying up as Chuck kept him sane, kept the dreams of blood and ashes from overwhelming him, of snow falling softly on bodies stacked like cordwood.

They’d both led squads of hardened battle veterans and scared-stiff greenhorns, fresh from the States. Somehow they’d managed to survive the Battle of the Bulge with minimal injuries and no losses.

He’d come home to Dolores, but Dolores was gone, and Chuck was here.

Teddy drew closer. He didn’t want to spook his friend. While Chuck didn’t seem to harbor any hostility toward Mel and Johnny because of their love, it was always different when it was yourself in such a relationship.

For now, Teddy was content with what he could get.
