DARKNESS COMING

By the light
Of the silvery moon,
Comes the cry
Of the shrieking loon.

My spine’s
All a-shiver,
My heart’s
All a-quiver,

By the light
Of the silvery moon.

Johnny leaned against the corral rail, one booted foot on the lower rung. He was dressed in a cherry-red flannel shirt and blue jeans, wearing his turquoise-and-silver belt buckle. He wore a turquoise-and-white Indian choker, his hand toying with the beads.

Wisps of dreams teased his mind. He had awakened with only jumbled memories of his dreams, but they had left him with rattled emotions, disturbed by…he didn’t know what.

Johnny watched as Roy led Shamrock the mare out of the stable. She had a sore foreleg and needed to walk to stretch it out, though only for a short time. He watched Shamrock’s progress, but his gaze soon drifted to Roy.

In October’s light, his hair almost seemed afire, shining-blond with glints of strawberry-red. Johnny had never seen more beautiful hair.

He allowed himself to simply look, soaking in the luxury of feasting his gaze on the man he loved.

Roy spoke softly to the dappled mare, petting her silky gray mane. He kept a slow pace for the mare, who stumbled slightly.

Roy sure looks good in that blue shirt and jeans.

Johnny’s lips curved into a smile. He rested his chin in the palm of his hand.

“You’re so beautiful, Roy,” Johnny murmured, love settling into his bones as he watched Roy being gentle with the mare.

“He’s good with her.”

Johnny turned to see Serina Ashby standing next to him.

“Hello, Ms. Ashby.”

“Serina, please.” She watched Roy. “He’s a gentle man.”

“Very.” Pride suffused Johnny’s voice. “He’s a good man.”

She rested her arm on the top rung of the fence. “You’re very lucky to have him.”

Johnny wondered if she’d guessed about him and Roy. He probably shouldn’t be surprised. He and Roy did live together, though they explained it as Roy needing to share expenses since his budget was extremely tight after his divorce.

People will see what they want to see.

Very few would guess the true nature of his and Roy’s relationship, not even able to conceive of the two of them as lovers. Straight-arrow Roy and eternal skirt-chaser Johnny as gay lovers? Ridiculous!

Johnny smiled.

“Beautiful,” Serina murmured as the light hit Roy’s hair again.

Jealousy tinged Johnny’s eyes green. He wanted to kick the rung his foot rested against in frustration at his situation. He couldn’t openly lay his claim to Roy. It was far too risky, and yet all he wanted to do was growl at Serina, “Back off!”

Serina’s perfume was a scent Johnny couldn't quite identify. It was sweet and sharp at the same time. What was it?

“It’s patchouli.”

Startled, Johnny looked at an amused Serina. “How did…?”

“You were scrunching up your face and thinking deep thoughts.”

“About perfume?”

“Yep.”

Johnny tossed his head in exasperation. “You think you’re a mind-reader?” He swallowed as her green eyes glittered and she continued to smile. “Um, I’ve smelled patchouli before.”

“It’s an intriguing scent, isn’t it?”

“Yeah, well, it’s, uh, it’s unusual, that’s for sure.”

“Where have you smelled patchouli before?”

“On the rez.”

He could have kicked himself. He rarely spoke of growing up on a reservation to anyone. Only now was he talking a little about it to Roy, and the rest of his crewmates only knew the simple fact of him growing up there, virtually nothing else.

“Darkness is coming your way, John Gage.”

Heart contracting, Johnny stuttered, “Wh…what do you mean?”

Serina placed one hand on her hip. “Just what I said.”

“What are you talking about?”

“I’m here to help you.”

Johnny swallowed. “Are you a shaman?”

Serina nodded. “Close.” She clutched her amulet for a moment, then reached into her pants pocket. She was wearing black jeans, boots, and the turtleneck jersey she’d worn at the station a few days ago. She drew out a small black velvet box and opened the lid.

Inside nestled on black velvet were two necklaces identical to Serina’s: round silver moons with chips of emeralds embedded in the silver surface.

“These are for you and Roy.”

“But why…?”

“He’s the target, but if you get in the way, you’ll need protection, too.”

“What danger are you talking about?” Johnny’s insides were quivering.

“I’m sorry I can’t give specifics. Dreams aren’t always easy to interpret. I just know that Darkness is coming for him.”

Johnny remembered what he’d seen on the rez, what he’d experienced in some of the ceremonies, and took the box.

“You both need to wear these for the foreseeable future. You’ll know when the Darkness comes.”

Johnny lifted out one of the silver moon pendants. A close examination showed that the emerald chips were shaped like shamrocks. They glittered in the sunlight and Johnny carefully placed the pendant back in the box.

“I’m sorry I can’t tell you more.” Serina sighted. “Forecasting is such an inexact science.”

Johnny nearly laughed. “Don’t the weathermen say the same thing?”

“Depends. Are we talking weather forecasters or political activists?”

Johnny chuckled, but he could see the concern in her eyes. His own nerves were tightening.

“Hey, Serina! Nice to see you. Is Joe with you?” asked Roy as he led Shamrock over.

“No, just me.” Serina’s smile was disarming. She seemed totally relaxed, yet was studying Roy. The surge of jealousy came upon Johnny again, but he quickly pushed it away. Serina seemed genuinely worried about Roy instead of lusting after him.

“What’s in the box?”

Johnny lifted the lid. “A gift from Serina.”

“They’re beautiful.”

Serina held the box as Johnny took out one pendant and put the chain around Roy’s neck, clasping the lock shut.

“Shamrocks,” Roy laughed.

“Yes, Joe said you have green blood,” Serina said with a wink.

“Green blood,” Roy murmured, staring down at the silver moon.

Johnny put the pendant around his neck. “You okay, Roy?”

“Umm, yeah.”

Johnny and Serina exchanged looks.

“Roy, I need to speak with you,” Serina said.

“Uh, sure.” He still looked a little out of it.

“Serina has dreams,” Johnny said.

Roy looked at his lover. “Dreams?”

“Yeah.”

Serina explained her misgivings and Roy patted Shamrock. “That’s kind of vague.”

“I’m afraid prophetic dreams don’t come with Cliffs Notes.”

Roy chuckled. “I suppose not.”

“Do you believe in prophecy, Roy?”

Roy’s eyes took on a distant look, and Johnny studied him even closer than Serina.

“Roy?” he asked softly.

Blue eyes fixed on him. “My mom and grandmother…saw things.”

Surprised, Johnny said nothing, but Serina asked, “So it runs in the family?”

“I don’t have dreams like that.”

Johnny could hear the hedging in Roy’s voice. Something flickered in Serina’s eyes, but she only said, “Keep the amulet with you. When Darkness comes, you’ll need it.”

“How will it protect us?” Johnny asked.

“Just keep it close to your heart.” She patted Shamrock’s nose. “If I get any more information I’ll pass it along.” She smiled sadly and started for her car. Turning back, she said, “Halloween is when the veil between the worlds of living and dead are thinnest.”

Johnny felt iciness shiver down his spine.
