Red hair stark
Against the night,
Red-lipped smile
Flashing bright.

Beware,
Gotham scum!
Beware!

The Batwoman
Will send you
On the run.

"THERE'S A NEW BAT IN TOWN!!!"

The cowled figure swept down into the alley, cape flowing upward. A flash of red hair startled the crooks busy robbing a jewelry store.

“What the hell? You’re not Batman!”

Teeth gleamed in the darkness. “That’s right, scum. Gotham’s got a new Bat in town: Batwoman.”

The thug snarled, “You’ve got a long way to go before you can call yourself a Bat, lady.”

“Really? Well, I guess I’d better start proving myself, then.”

Batwoman lashed out, her boot connecting with the thug’s jaw, ignoring the howls of rage all around her. She slammed another crook into the brick wall as the snow fell in delicate swirls, sprinkling everyone with a light dusting of white, easily dodging a sap wielded by another thug. She pirouetted gracefully, then karate-chopped the next two crooks.

There was a flurry of more kicks and punches and before the gang knew it, they were groaning in pain sprawled out on the alley floor and efficiently trussed up with strong nylon ropes.

The Batwoman leaped over the rooftops, the GCPD arriving ten minutes later to make the arrests.

There was a new Bat in town.

Clark leaned back in the chair, tracking criminal activity through the police scanner and the cameras Bruce had placed in strategic areas around the city. Batman and Robin were out on patrol, and so far things were quiet on a cold, snowy, January night…

Clark leaned forward, blinking as he looked at the camera overlooking Wayne Park as the scanner squawked, “Jewelry store robbery foiled at Ravel’s Jewelers on the Diamond Coast by the Batwoman.”

“What the…?”

He saw a flash of red hair as a shapely figure flew over the rooftops of the buildings bordering the park. Dark costume with accents of red: the Bat-symbol on her chest, her utility belt, her luxurious hair.

Clark quickly activated his commlink. “Batman…”

“I heard. Have you got a firm location on her?”

“Wayne Park, by the entrance.”

“Roger. Out.”

Clark kept his eyes on the camera. If she moved, he’d relay the information.

He watched the new superhero, cataloguing her grace as she leapt to the next roof, red hair flaming out behind her. Her combination of red-and-black was a good choice.

He was proud that someone had been inspired by the Bat. He just hoped that she was well-trained to start with. Gotham was no place to learn on the job.

“Your tea and cookies, Clark.”

“Thank you, Alfred.” Clark picked up a raspberry sugar cookie and gestured with it toward the screen. “There’s a new Bat in town.”

“Really?” Alfred looked with interest. “My word!”

“Her costume’s really striking, isn’t it?”

“Especially with that red hair.” Alfred folded his arms. “This is an interesting new development.” He smiled slyly. “She’ll keep Master Bruce on his toes.”

Clark laughed.

He monitored other news, seeing President To Speak At Empire HQ and Raid On Beta Colony Successful. Weapons Stolen. Metropolis Announces New Battered Women’s Shelter, Hera’s Haven.

The Batmobile glided up several feet from the entrance. Batman and Robin got out and shot their lines up, flying up to the roof of a nearby building.

Batwoman was waiting for them.

“Batwoman, I hear.”

“That’s right.” Her voice was husky, what would once have been called a ‘cigarette voice’.

“So you’re staking out Gotham as your territory?”

Batman’s voice was neutral, but Robin heard the challenge. He smiled at Batwoman, who smiled back. Batman’s black cape slid over Robin’s shoulders. Robin smiled to himself.

“I think Gotham’s big enough for three crimefighters,” said Batwoman.

Robin smiled even brighter. Batwoman’s stance was relaxed, putting Batman off his game.

“This isn’t an easy city to ply our trade,” Batman said.

“I’m aware of that. Batman, I don’t take this lightly. I know what a tremendous job you and Robin have done in this city.”

Robin wanted to do a backflip but remained still by Batman’s side. He liked this woman, and not because she was being complimentary. He just had good instincts about people.

“I assume your training has been of the most rigorous.” Batman’s tone was grim.

“Of course. I would never come out here otherwise.” She rested a gloved hand on her hip. “Are you intimating that you want to put me through my paces?”

“Do you need to?”

She smiled, the ruby of her lips stark against her pale skin. “Do you think you want to?”

Batman crossed his arms. “If you’re out here, as you say, you should be capable.”

“Good.” She tossed back flame-red hair. “Because I can be of help to you, Batman.” He raised an eyebrow. “Gotham is nearly overrun with slave-stealing rings. Too many for just you and Robin to keep track of. Even the GCPD can’t handle them all.”

“And your addition to the crimefighting ranks will?”

Her smile was predatory. “Yes. I’ve been researching the scum and know things that could be useful.”

Batman frowned. “What things?”

“The Norwich Street Gang have connections outside the city.”

“So? Most of the gangs do.”

“I’m not talking about Star City or Metropolis.”

“Where, then?”

“Orion.”

Robin’s eyes widened and Batman stiffened. “That’s a helluva connection.”

“Really.” Batwoman’s smile was smug. “But the Orions have no scruples. A major portion of their GNP is connected to the slave trade, and that doesn’t even count the illegal smuggling they specialize in. They raid ships in remote places and take the crews and passengers to sell, even those like Terrans who firmly believe if you’re born free, you should never be enslaved.”

“True.” Batman shifted slightly. “Not all cultures are so rigidly separated. The Librans and others like them don’t believe that a slave must remain one forever. They can be freed or buy their way out of slavery, and freemen can be enslaved for certain crimes.”

Batwoman nodded. “Orions don’t care either way. They don’t observe the niceties like their biggest rivals, the Rigellians, do.”

“The Rigellians have their share of illegal smugglers.”

“True.” She put a boot on the edge of the roof. “But generally the Rigellian slavers follow the law, and vigorously pursue their planet’s smugglers. The Orions are the craftiest when it comes to smuggling, and can procure all manners of slaves.”

“Do you have proof of this connection?”

“Not yet, but my contacts are certain. It’ll require heavy surveillance to bust up this particular ring.”

“Well, we don’t have anything else to do,” Robin spoke up impishly.

Batwoman smiled. “I’d be happy to work with you, Boy Wonder.”

Batman huffed, “You’ll get two of us, Batwoman.”

“Sounds good to me. I’ll meet you on Monarch Street at midnight tomorrow.”

She took out her line and flew over the rooftops, Batman grudgingly admitting that she was good, Robin admiring her grace and power. She had an acrobat’s style.
