THE NATURAL ORDER
Kara watched as the blue-white globe of Earth grew larger through the space liner’s window.
A beautiful planet.
Pity it’s rotten to the core.
She watched the docking procedure with interest. It was flawlessly efficient.
And then there was the sun.
The yellow sun.
She wished she could bathe herself in its rays right now. She had been on yellow sun worlds before. The feeling of power was…unparalleled. A pity her people couldn’t be this powered under any sun.
We could oust the moneychangers and slavemongers from the Empire, and bring the Day of Freedom to herald a whole new world.
She needed more practice with her powers. Earth would be a good training ground, as long as she found a remote spot.
She was also meeting an important contact for weapons for her group.
Kill two birds with one stone, as the locals say.

Clark was tense as the opening statements were read over the WGBH news channel. With cameras barred from the courtroom, the words lacked the flair of the lawyers.
The words of the defense lawyer still hurt.
Dick was curled up next to him on the couch, Alfred in his favorite chair. The older man insisted that Clark drink the mint tea he had prepared to calm his nerves.
The female commentator, Eleanora du Maurier, smiled for the cameras. Her cloud of blond hair framed a pert face and bright blue eyes.
“Gotham’s Own, Kathy Kane, of the prominent Kane family, one of the First Families of Gotham, is using the premise of abuse of power and appealing to the jury’s humanity, as Bruce Wayne’s Prize was violated and tortured.”
Clark felt slightly ill, Dick grasping his hand and squeezing. Grateful for his young friend’s presence, Clark hugged him.
“Dick, would you brew another pot of tea, please?” Alfred asked.
“Yes, sir!”
Dick jumped up and took the teapot and tray, dashing off into the kitchen. Clark and Alfred couldn’t help but smile at each other, Clark chuckling.
“Does that boy have a degree of slow?” Alfred asked.
Clark laughed outright. “Probably not. How can he be Batman’s stealthy partner?”
“It is one of Nature’s mysteries, no doubt.” All trace of amusement left Alfred’s face. “If they show any portions of that tape…”
“…we shut the television off.”
“Quite. Dick does not need to see any of that, and neither do we need to see it again.”
“Agreed.” Clark’s stomach knotted at the memory of the torture he was forced to listen to while Edmund’s captive. He still had nightmares about it. “Dick is strong but too sensitive to see that.”
Alfred nodded. “We must not forget that even though he is the Batman’s partner and has filled that role brilliantly, he is still very young and very vulnerable at times.”
“Well, Eleanora, I agree with Addison Atterby’s defense. Caldwell stole a slave. So what? It should be kept between gentlemen, not dragged through open court. I’ve lost respect for Bruce Wayne.”
The silver-haired man was powerfully-built, his gray eyes steely despite his easy manner. Clark shivered.
“But, Senator Boller, some would argue that a Prize is valuable and should not be abused as Mr. Caldwell did to this particular pleasure slave.”
“Oh, Eleanora, we know that the Abolitionists are using this trial to further their agenda.” He frowned. “My colleague, Senator Lang, is using her position to push this puzzling agenda.”
“Puzzling? How so, Senator?”
“It puzzles me that people can get behind an agenda that would free slaves. Every religious text mentions slavery, and not a one advocates freeing slaves. The world’s societies have always practiced slavery. We see the examples throughout history. It’s a system that serves us well. Why would we want to change that?”
Clark stared at the distinguished Senator, his hand curling into a fist. “Extremely vulnerable,” he said softly.
Alfred silently agreed as Dick returned with a fresh pot of tea and frosted gingerbread cookies.

“Bastard.”
Martha had to agree with Jonathan’s growled expletive. She felt her own fury rise as she listened to Carl Boller’s hateful tirade.
Because it was hateful, and all too representative of the thinking of too many people. She and her fellow freedom fighters had to put up with this attitude all the time.
It was a constant, draining battle. Martha suddenly felt tired.
Maybe they were knocking their heads against the wall for no reason. Maybe attitudes were too entrenched, too immutable, to ever change. Maybe it was just a law of the Universe that slavery would exist.
She sighed and rose from her chair, wandering over to the mantel. Her heart ached as she gazed upon the gold-framed photograph of her, Jonathan, and Baby Clark taken in front of the house.
Clark had been such a beautiful baby with big, blue eyes, always smiling, all chubby cuteness with so much love to give, eager to please and always the light of his parents’ lives.
Clark had needed to go and find answers to who and what he was after graduating college, and those answers would be found in space, from where he came.
But he’d disappeared while on his journey several years ago, and there was no word from him since.
Would she and Jonathan ever know what had happened to their beautiful child?
Jonathan came up behind her, his big, strong hands on her shoulders.
Senator Boller’s voice came from the TV again.
“It’s divinely ordained that slavery should exist. When you go against the natural order of things, disaster happens. Look at what happened to Krypton.”
Anger surged up in her. She put her hand over Jonathan’s.
“I’m going to Gotham.”
