FREEDOM OF THE SKIES
Green Lantern flew through the air, his Ring glowing green with power. He had received training on Oa, quickly learning the fundamentals of learning how to use his Power Ring.
Willpower was the key, and he knew that he would always have plenty of that.
To think that the Guardians had chosen him out of all the billions of Humans on Earth and scattered throughout out the Empire! Though according to them, the Ring chose its next wearer.
Still, Hal was the first for Sector 2814. That was a great honor, and he intended to live up to that. He had been humbled by that idea, humbled and proud.
He would do Earth proud.

“You have been chosen, Hal Jordan.” The tall Oan regarded him with piercing blue eyes. “Your training will be accelerated, but you have tested worthy.”
“Thank you.”
Ojjix lifted his hand and another Oan came forward, slightly shorter but just as slender. “Ojj is our Lantern Master. He will be in charge of your training, as he was in charge of your Trials.”
Hal looked at the Oan with interest.

Hal was no stranger to arduous physical and mental training, but this Green Lantern training was incredible. It took everything he had and more.
Exhausted but exhilarated, Hal was happy during his time on Oa, his only regret missing Steve and Diana. They’d been so happy for him, supporting his candidacy.
“What a tremendous honor, Hal,” Diana had said, Steve smiling delightedly.
They had hugged him, wishing him good luck, and Hal had been able to journey to Oa with a light heart.

Hal carefully regulated a surge of power. He was still trying to get used to all the vagaries of the Ring. He had to be careful of the amount of power he used, as a Kryptonian would under a yellow sun.
Kryptonians.
They had been the subject of discussion on Oa.

Ojj looked at Hal, those blue eyes piercing. “What are your views on slavery, Hal Jordan?”
Hal frowned. “I don’t approve of it, but surely you knew that before you decided to train me.”
Approval flickered through those eyes. “Yes, but I want to hear it directly from you.”
“As I said, I don’t approve of it.”
“Does it disturb you?”
“Very much.”
“Enough to speak out against it?”
“You mean as Green Lantern?”
“As a Lantern and as Hal Jordan.”
“I can’t as Hal Jordan. Abolitionist sentiments are not allowed in the military.”
“So you never will speak out as Hal Jordan?”
“Not as long as I’m in the military.”
He could not tell whether Ojj approved of that answer. The Oan spoke again.
“The Hunt for Kryptonians is the primary Hunt in the Empire. What do you think about that?”
“Frankly, I think Hunts are abominations. They give no quarter. If you’re a Kryptonian, you die, whether you’re plotting against the Empire or not. Just merely existing gets you a death sentence. Barbaric.”
Ojj did seem pleased at that.

Hal glided through the air, ecstatic over being able to fly without the benefit of a jet. Freedom like that was precious, indeed. He was very lucky.
It also meant that he carried a heavy responsibility. He was responsible for the entire sector! Though the Guardians said that they would help him in the beginning.
Hal finished a joyful loop-de-loop, smiling as he enveloped himself in the green glow, obscuring himself from Human eyes. He flew toward home, suddenly thinking of Dick. The boy loved his aerial flying and would love this. Hal recognized a kindred spirit. Maybe someday he could take him on a flight. He smiled. Just as he would take Steve for a flight very soon.
He flew down to the patio, his Ring energy switching him from costume to civvies and keeping him invisible from prying eyes. He slid the glass doors opened and slipped inside.
It was quiet. He hadn’t seen Steve’s car in the driveway, so he was probably still at work. Diana was most likely at the Atheneum, reading ancient texts in the original Greek. She was a master historian, and she was gaining useful knowledge.
Hal sat down on the couch, rubbing tired eyes. His energy level had been high all day, but now he felt as drained as a balloon with the air let out.
So far he had only worked with Wonder Woman, for obvious reasons, but he would be meeting other heroes eventually.
That was an exciting thought. He had been part of something larger than himself all of his adult life as a member of the military, and now was a member of the Green Lantern Corps and the superhero community.
He was very happy to be part of these new groups. Important work was being done, and now he had a chance to change things for the better. He could not speak out against slavery as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force, but could as Green Lantern.
He had seen the toll that slavery had taken on Diana, and he was learning more and more about the details of what Clark had suffered at the hands of Edmund Caldwell when the old degenerate had kidnapped him last year, not to mention that hideous tape that showed Edmund’s sadism in all its ugly glory.
Hal flexed his fingers back-and-forth into a fist. He could help stop such abominations now.
The sound of a car coming up the driveway distracted him, doors slamming shut. The back door opened and Steve and Diana spilled into the house, laughing with their arms around each other.
“Hey, Hal, flight over?” Steve asked with a sparkle in his eyes.
Hal grinned. “Yeah, flyboy. How about you? You and Diana have a good time?”
“Oh, yeah, didn’t we, sweetheart?” Steve nuzzled Diana’s hair.
“Most assuredly, Beloved.”
Diana hugged Hal, Steve giving him a kiss, searching his lover’s face. “All well?”
Hal smiled fondly and drew Steve close with an arm around his shoulders.
“All’s well, love.”
Diana joined them, and Hal realized that this was the group that he was happiest to be part of, for certain.
