THE LAW

Bruce was stunned as he saw Clark snap the manacle back onto his right wrist. He shot his hand out and grabbed Clark’s arm. “What are you doing?”

“Putting my manacles back on,” Clark answered calmly.

“But, Clark, you’re…”

“…free?” At Bruce’s nod, Clark shook his head. “You’re forgetting the law.”

“What?”

Clark almost laughed at Bruce’s frustration. Bruce did not like to be puzzled or confused. He liked answers.

“The law clearly states that non-Human slaves can be freed by Human Masters, but only by petitioning the slave’s homeworld for permission.” Clark’s smile was sad. “I no longer have a homeworld.”

“Yes, but…”

“Bruce, how do you think I can stay here if I don’t play my part?”

“I could say I sent you away, or are keeping you under a House Veil after your kidnapping.”

“I couldn’t go out in public with you anymore.”

“We could create a new identity for you as a freeman, or use the one you’ll be remembering soon if it’s suitable.”

“Bruce, this is the perfect secret identity.” Clark snapped the other manacle on, and took the collar from Bruce. “Right by your side.”

“But, but…with your powers, you could just fly away.”

Clark drew closer. “Who says I want to?”

Swallowing, Bruce blinked back tears. Clark’s smile became softer as he placed a hand on his lover’s chest.

“I’m not leaving you, Bruce. Not now, not ever.”

Bruce closed his eyes for a moment, then opened them with love shining in their blue depths. He drew Clark into a kiss, holding on tightly.

When they parted, Bruce frowned as he saw Clark putting on the collar. “It can’t be good for your body to put these off-and-on.”

“Can you get your master silversmith to make up a duplicate set? Something that looks like Rainbow K but isn’t?”

“Hmm, I’m sure he could. You won’t have to wear them in private.”

“Oh, but I think I do.” Clark adjusted to his loss of power, swaying slightly. “How would Alfred and Dick feel if I walked around without slave jewelry, something they can’t do?”

Bruce eyes softened. “You’re amazing.”

Clark smiled. Bruce took his arm and they headed inside.
