WEDDING BELLS

“Mmm, ‘mornin’, Pretty Bird.”

Dinah smiled as Ollie nuzzled her neck. “Good morning, m’lord.” She stretched luxuriously in their bed.

The Lord of Queens’ Castle smiled at her, his hand brushing blond locks from her eyes.

“Did you sleep well, m’lady?”

“I certainly did.”

His green eyes sparkled. “What do you say we make Lady of Queens’ Castle the real thing?”

“Huh?” Dinah blinked.

Ollie grinned. “You ready to officially become the Lady of the House?”

Dina laughed. “I think I am!”

Ollie joined in her laughter and threw his arms around his Pretty Bird.

Melody’s brown eyes were shining. “Really, Mistress? You and the Master are getting married?”

“Yes,” Dinah said, delighted at her Squire’s excitement.

She and the others were seated in the solarium, the plants green and lush, interspersed with splashes of yellow, red, orange, purple, blue, and white. The glass windows were framed by the glory of Nature outdoors, the trees in full autumn color.

“That’s great!” beamed Roy.

“Guess who are going to help Ollie and me plan this big Society bash?” Dinah asked.

Melody jumped up, clasping her hands together. “Roy and me!”

“That’s right.”

Roy looked questioningly at Ollie, who grinned and clapped a hand on his shoulder.

“Yep, while the womenfolk decide about dresses and centerpiece and bouquets, we menfolk will hammer out logistics, like where to put all the cars and the guests and what kind of arbor will we build? Real ‘manly’ stuff.”

Roy laughed. “Okay!”

Dinah pretended to be indignant, rolling her eyes while Melody giggled.

“So, cara mia, you’ll be my Lady’s right hand?” asked Ollie.

“Oh, yes, Ollie!”

Ollie smiled. “All right, first thing is to set a date.”

“This time next autumn,” Dinah said.

“Sounds good to me.”

They set the specific date and checked to see if the church was available. It was booked solid for the entire month.

“Why not hold the wedding here as well as the reception?” Roy suggested.

“Perfect!” Dinah gave him a hug. “We can make this place beautiful for a wedding.”

Ollie nodded approvingly and Melody clapped her hands. Roy blushed but was glad to contribute something useful.

Plans immediately started to be made, and Roy found himself making several more useful suggestions, which pleased him greatly.

He felt happy here. Ollie and Dinah were more than just kind. They genuinely cared about him and Melody, and that meant the world to Roy.

He felt safe here. That was important for any kid, but especially for one who wore a collar and manacles. Ollie and Dinah would defend their Squires to the death.

He got along well with Melody. She was like a little sister to him, and Dick was his best friend. He wished that he could see him more often, but there was always e-mail and phone calls and visual conference calls.

Roy was happy that he and Melody were allowed free use of the computers. While the computers were monitored by the Government, Ollie and Dinah did not check them regularly. They had explained that they trusted their Squires, and Roy and Melody took that trust to heart.

The four of them worked diligently on the plans, the afternoon sun slanting through the glass of the solarium.

“You have to have the finest dress ever, Dinah!” Melody insisted.

“I agree,” said Ollie, bestowing an affectionate smile on Dinah, who smiled back.

“Well, of course it must be the best dress of all!” Dinah said firmly with a wink.

“What about the guest list?” Melody asked.

“Friends and family first, then our business contacts.”

“Dinah.” Ollie reached out and grasped his lady’s hand. “Are you sure you’re okay with this Society bash? We can elope, or just have a small wedding.”

Dinah squeezed his hand. “Honey, I’m fine with this. If I wasn’t, I’d let you know.” Her blue eyes sparkled. “Besides, I’m relishing the thought of being the Society event of the year.”

Ollie laughed and squeezed back, “That’s my girl.”

As they unclasped hands, Dinah regarded Roy and Melody warmly. “I’m very happy. I have my family around me, and I’m marrying the love of my life.”

“Fa…family?” Melody choked out.

“Yes.” Dinah smoothed her Squire’s hair. “You and Roy are very special to us, dear.”

Tears fell down Melody’s cheeks, and Roy’s eyes misted, too. Ollie looked at him with deep emotion as Dinah hugged Melody. He gave Roy a hug, too.

The sun began to set, sending rays of yellow-gold, raspberry-red and burnt-orange into the solarium through panes of glass as warmth spread.
