LOVE’S PRICE

The price of love
Is always high,
Yet we never stop
And always try,
To pay it.

Lady Rose Mallory
"The Language Of Love"
1466 C.E.

Once upon a time, there were two Princes who ruled their kingdoms wisely and well, though they served under their fathers. Prince Bruce of Gotham was respected by his father and mother and all the people, and he was content though lonely. Prince Alexander of Metropolis fought with his father but the people loved him, for without him, King Lionel would have ruled as a tyrant.

The two lands were of Light and Dark: Prince Bruce and his parents were kind and good in gloomy ol’ Gotham while Prince Alexander held the darkness at bay in sunny Metropolis.

He grew weary of the neverending battle and wished to find true love. He wanted someone to share his burdens and joys, but King Lionel had other ideas. He wanted his son to marry the Crown Prince of Gotham, because once the kingdoms were united he would have access to her Darkness and that would give him great power.

Prince Alexander went out to the countryside on one fine early autumn day, the last of the harvest coming in. Workers labored in the fields as Alexander rode his white horse.

He saw a comely, strapping young lad with glossy back hair and dismounted. The lad was even more beautiful close up with eyes of emerald-green and a shy smile that dazzled.

“Do you wish to share the midday meal with us, Your Majesty? My mother is the finest cook in all the land.”

“Verily, young Clark. Lead on.”

The cottage of the Kents was modest but clean with blue shutters and windowboxes, and Jonathan and Martha welcomed the Prince graciously. Martha served hunter’s stew, a savory mix of beef, carrots, onions and celery, and Jonathan brought out his homemade beer. Lex approved of both effusively, eliciting smiles from everyone.

“Ah, but you honor us with your presence, Your Majesty,” Jonathan said.

“Thank you.”

Clark smiled and once again dazzled the lonely Prince.

After the meal Alexander asked for a tour of the farm and Jonathan granted it. “Clark, show His Majesty around.”

“Yes, Father.”

Alexander kept his eyes on the beautiful farmboy while Clark showed him the fields and woods, all ablaze in autumn glory. When they stopped by a stream to drink, Alexander touched Clark’s arm.

“Call me Lex.”

Clark’s smile blazed like the sun.

In the days that followed, the Prince courted the young farmboy and they fell in love.

Alas, King Lionel had spies everywhere and resolved to end this ill-starred romance.

The Prince of Gotham journeyed to Metropolis, attended by his bright young Squire. Bruce wished to visit old friend Lex, and it was good to keep communications open between Gotham and Metropolis.

“Bruce?”

“Hmm?” Bruce watched the sunlight sparkle on the lake.

“Are you worried about Prince Lex?”

Bruce smiled down at the boy. “Perceptive, my Squire.”

Dick flashed a smile. “I like Lex.”

“And he likes you.” Bruce was hoping to reach the Castle soon so that he could get out of his armor. It offered protection but was heavy to wear. “Now, mind, steer clear of King Lionel when you can. He is not to be trusted.”

Dick nodded.

Bruce was welcomed with the proper pomp and circumstance. Lionel was as unctuous as always while Lex was warmly welcoming. There was a sumptuous luncheon to greet the weary travelers, Lionel sparring verbally with his guest.

“And how is Gotham?”

“The same: dark and demanding.”

Lex laughed. “Good to hear.” He snapped his fingers and his servant appeared with a crystal tray of sweets. Dick beamed while Bruce smiled. The dark confections were from the land beyond the ocean, a delicacy that most people could not afford.

“Thank you, Lex.”

Lex smiled in return. “Only the best for the best.”

Bruce savored his sweet.

Lex took Bruce and Dick to the farm, Bruce impressed by the beauty of the young farmboy. He and Dick felt the warmth of the little cottage as the family welcomed them with open arms. Here was goodness and sunshine and corn rippling in the fields.

Bruce understood why Lex was so smitten with Clark and felt a pang of envy.

At the end of the week, Lex held court and Bruce and Dick journeyed to the cottage. Clark helped his father in the fields and looked up as an old man in a ragged brown cloak shuffled along the dirt road. The peasant left the road and came closer.

“Have an apple, young man,” rasped the old man.

“Thank you, kind sir.” Clark’s eyes lit up at the sight of the shiny red apple. He took it and raised it to his mouth to take a bite when a voice called, “Stop!”

Clark looked up, startled, as Bruce thundered on Midnight toward him. Dick was right behind him on Sunshine.

“Wha…?” Clark asked.

“That apple is bewitched!”

The elderly man hissed and disappeared in a puff of smoke. Astonished, Clark asked, “How did you know, Sir Knight?”

“I sensed it. Lex told us that Lionel is dabbling in the Dark Arts.”

“Why would the King wish to bewitch me?”

“More like poison,” Dick said, making a face as he sniffed the apple. “Rotten to the core.”

Clark was so distressed that he shivered.

“You must be careful,” Bruce said.

“I am no threat to King Lionel!”

Bruce tried to calm him down. He was fearful for the beautiful farmboy’s safety. Lionel was extremely dangerous.

He must know that Lex loves Clark, but why would that bother him? Lex cannot marry a farmboy. He must marry a noble or royal, like I must.

But who knew the dark ways of Lionel?

“I will consult with Lex and see what can be done.”

& & & & & &

Lex was extremely concerned at the news of Clark’s brush with death. The apple had most likely been poisoned or some evil enchantment cast upon it.

“Why would Lionel want to rid himself of a good-hearted farmboy?” Bruce asked.

“He must know that I love Clark.”

Bruce felt that envy again but was happy for his old friend, remembering their own days of young love. Lex had been the first he had ever lain with.

“I would be happy to guard him.”

Lex nodded and clapped Bruce on the shoulder. “Yes, you and Dick head out there tomorrow.”

“At first light, my friend.” Bruce grasped Lex’s arm in a Knight’s gesture.

The curtain at the end of the hall rippled as a shadow moved.

& & & & & &

Bruce could feel snow coming. The sky was slate-gray and the clouds heavy with it. He and Dick rode in warm clothing, long capes fluttering out behind them. Bruce was clad in silver-and-black and Dick in red-green-and-yellow.

Bruce was uneasy. While he was more accustomed to his city speaking to him, this fertile land was doing so now. Something evil was in the air.

Something wicked this way comes.

As he and Dick approached the farm, they saw Clark working in the fields when suddenly a thunderous noise rumbled down the road, a cloud of dust kicking up as a posse of riders bore down on them.

“Clark, up behind me!” Bruce shouted.

Dick grabbed something from a pouch attached to his belt and threw it at their pursuers, a cloud of pink smoke erupting as the object hit the ground. Horses whinnied and men shouted as the smoke enveloped them. Bruce steered Midnight down the road and Dick urged Sunshine to follow.

They raced like the wind and Clark pointed out a path into the woods. Bruce and Dick steered their horses in that direction, plunging into the autumn-bright glory of the forest.

The further they traveled into the forest, the darker and quieter it became. Finally, Bruce stopped and Dick did, too. The horses cooled down as they drank from a stream.

“What happened?” Clark asked fearfully.

“King Lionel wishes to kill you.”

“But why?” Clark cried.

“Lex is in love with you.”

Clark appeared dumbstruck at such a reason for murder. He obviously was not familiar with royal politics. Taking pity on him, Bruce said, “We have to disappear.”
