I don't actually know much about the internet either, even though I work on it, but I definitely agree that the buried announcement + opt-out is extremely uncool. And for what it's worth, yeah, it seems a little creepy to me. I just opted out.

Most stats packages you'd get if you had your own website would include what browser users use as well as what brought them to the site (search terms, links off of other sites, etc.). But some of the other stuff seems a bit creepy...

I'm generally unpleased by the way lj distributes information over lj biz versus news, but this in particular doesn't creep me out ... I think they need it to be opt-out to really get a representative random sampling of users, or at least, that's the rationale, which doesn't seem unfair to me.

I still am not thrilled with lj these days, but this isn't high on my priority list of things to gripe about.
