I bought thr book "Just Enough To Know Better," but I find it extremely boring. The binding is also just not good for reading. Also, the "reading lessons" are soooo long that my fingers get numb after a line or 2! And lastly, there is just not enough practice of the Braille 2 cpntractions. I started learning Braille out of interest, but am now ( Read more... )

If you're legally blind, the Hadley School for the Blind offers courses in contracted braille. If you already know enough braille, you could get braille books from somewhere like NLS and practice.

Also, your fingers shouldn't be going numb after only a few lines. It might be that you're pressing down too hard when you're reading. You're supposed to be barely touching the dots as you read them.

Good luck learning braille!

Try Braille Through Remote Learning it's a great online program! Even better for those who need it, they have great braille charts to print along with the rules. And they have a flashcard game for both grade 1 and 2 braille. Even though you use your eyes for the net it gives you great practice to reconise dot numbers.

Once you can fly reconising dot numbers it's nothing but cake when your fingers get to the actual braille.

Hey Molly,
I know a site that has a private message thing. It has two people on it that helping people on it called brailleschool.com. Maybe if you can get someone to send you braille notes and you can decode the braille as a practice and also write back and let them see how you do. That what I do sometimes. And I am sighted. That way it not boring to learn. There are quizzed books you can get from the bookstores and also you can always ask the gang here if you get stuck. Also ask the teachers on brailleschool.com, too if you get stuck on a word too.

I noted that with the binding of Just Enough to Know Better as well.

I figured if I ever bought it, I'd take out the staples, slice down the binding, and then put the pages into a 3-ring binder, to make it easier to read. I'm not sure if the rings of the binder would get in the way, though, when trying to read the left-hand pages--not a problem with this book since it's print on that side, but might be if you were considering this method for other books as well.
