Nobody can look at you skeptically better than a cop, and no cop better than a New York cop. Ian was getting the look full force from Detective Scarletti. "You really think this guy can help us?" The detective gestured toward the figure studying the map of recent murders.

Ian had to admit he didn't look like much. Short, dressed in a tuxedo of all things, with a sharp widow's peak, a monocle, and... purplish tinged skin? Ian smiled weakly. "Look, Chalie Eppes has been able to help the L.A. office of the Bureau several times, and this guy's supposed to be into numbers, too. Give him a chance."

The cop looked at him for another moment, then half-shrugged and turned to watch the numbers expert. As if on cue, he stepped toward the map and raised a hand to point at each of the murder sites in turn. "One, two, three, four, five! Five murders! BWA-HA-HA-HA-HA!"

Outside there was a flash, and a crack of thunder. Detective Scarletti turned to stare at Ian, who turned away and rested his forehead against the wall. It was going to be a long day.
