How ironic is it that tonight's scheduled groundbreaking for a new Twins ballpark has been postponed? Even the stadium barkers realize it is in poor taste to celebrate the spending of half a billion on ballparks when your bridges are falling down. Perhaps this is a sign of shame. I wouldn't call it ignorance -- stupidity perhaps. The proper word escapes me. It's strickly budgetary. This bridge wasn't slated to be replaced until 2020 and until then, they were going to 'mend' it in hopes of avoiding a collapse. It saddens me that it takes events such as this one, Katrina, pipes in NY, etc. to question America's failing infrastructure on a national level. Why is it that they wait until people are put at risk and die to actually do something about the internal problems. Maybe this will get the candidates to start talking about the needs of this country. I'm so saddened by the injuries and by the death of those on the bridge, and at the same time hope that this pushes us towards a turning point in this country. Maybe I'm just a hopeless dreamer.
