For American Idol Fans

Here's the first release from my favorite contestant last year, Allison Iraheta. I'm kind of torn on this one. I was afraid that the record company would try to change her into a Pink style rocker when she would be much better in blues-rock. Well, this is too hard for Pink, but it's definitely not bluesy. I'd be interested in hearing what ( Read more... )

I don't really like it, but I think it's less...contrived than the usual post-AI releases.

I agree, it really doesn't sound like the usual AI pop, which is good, but she has the ability to be more bluesy and gritty and that doesn't come out in this at all.

love her voice.

I have a hard time separating people musically from the way they treat me when I wait on them at the restaurant, so my love for her is limited to her voice, but still ;) She's just a kid, I forgive her.

Yeah, she is just a kid. I came across her record company's link to her Twitter stream and looked at it and it is totally 16-year-old spelling, attitudes, etc. I guess all kids can't have the brain of Taylor Swift who has been talking like an adult she was in the womb.

How were those around her? If it was her family and they weren't doing anything to bring her in line, I'd say there isn't a lot of hope for the future.

Her voice is exactly as somewhat gritty as always: I like it a lot but feel it's limited in nuance, as always, the tune is post-"Since U Been Gone" loud, heavily guitared power pop, which was utterly terrific for two songs ("Since U Been Gone" and the Veronicas' "4ever," which by the way may be getting a rerelease four years after it was recorded and three years after it debuted here, now that it's gone top 40 in Britain) and then became reliably catchy sugar noise (e.g., "Girlfriend" and "I Kissed A Girl" and "U + Ur Hand" and "My Life Would Suck Without You") that's always been grating and a bit annoying but also hard not to get hooked by, and I wonder if anyone remembers Megan McCauley's "Tap That" from 2006, another Max Martin song done by another rough-voiced teen, but I think it's more successful than this, but this is more successful than not, and I'll probably end up humming it compulsively. And I think it'd be better softer and with less grit.

Too much production and thump-thump, not enough grit. Still, I'd like to hear more of her.
