I never met him online or irl, but I knew him by his art and reputation. He sounded like a really cool, nice guy to hang out with and I am disappointed that I never got the chance to know him better.
I am glad so many people enjoyed his company, whether it be by online means or in person. it sad when a good person goes too soon. My thoughts are with you.
I've been considering my own Athus post, mainly because he did a couple of unnecessarily nice things for me, besides getting to hang with him some at AC this year. I don't want to be on the bandwagon, though :/
Its just the people going 'who is athus but Im so saaaad', or going 'we were so close and shared everything i love him and he loved me', when we talked between ourselves about how he thought they were a douche.. =/
Athus was always a figurehead in the draconic community due to his art and spirituality. Back in the days of when I was on Draconic it wasn't uncommon for a conversation with someone to go like "Hi my name is Draco I breathe fire I'm 3000 ft tall and I know Athus!" I lost of track of how many times his name came up unwarranted in early conversations - his name was just that pervasive.
So I find it unsurprising that the people who did that ^ would be doing something similar upon learning about his death. The whole thing is like celebrity worship, and as you said, it feels wrong. :|
