I wonder why no one bothered to say anything years ago when the IOC was picking the host city.

At the time the IOC released statements that they believed the Olympics would force a change in human rights in China and China promised to open up to the media.
Many people hoped for it and over the past 2 years the realization that nothing would change developed into the Tibetan Freedom Torch, a protest torch relay that is occuring at the same time and leading to the Tibetan Freedom Games at Dharamsala, India, home of the Tibetan government in exile.
