Raw Milk

Since developing allergies to beans and milk, I've been searching for workarounds and alternatives. So far, I've found that speckled butter beans and limas are safe for me to eat, as are cultured milk products, such as butter, cheese, cottage cheese, cream cheese, sour cream... you name it. A glass of milk, though, or a bowl of cereal in milk, has ( Read more... )

I hate milk. With a passion. Not least because I'm now lactose intolerant, but because of my childhood experiences with the stuff. Our primary school 'made' us drink a third of a pint of whole milk every day.....during the winter the staff would put the milk crates on top of the radiators to 'warm'. By the time milk break came around the stuff was about 40 deg C.

Oh. Warm milk is horrifying. Milk must be ice cold to be drank. I won't pour mine til I'm sitting at my seat.

That would have put me off milk forever.

And worse....it was 'full' milk and, as a result, full of yellow globs of warm fat.

Ew. I'll roll my eyes in bliss over the cream at the top, but it better be cold, and I don't want to see globs of fat.

EW!

Stupid Nanny state.

Yay for Milk!! Can't you check the countryside for a farm that would let you pick up each week? I was just there--the farms aren't too far outside the city;)

Cool story though!

There could be dairy cows nearer to me, but their milk can't be sold. The CowShare program is the only legal way to get raw milk.

They deliver on Tuesdays to somewhere in Shelbyville, and then carpools from the surrounding areas bring the milk to (in my nearest case) Centerville, which is between me and LaGrange. It's about a 20 minute drive.

Raw milk ftw! I love the stuff, only milk I have ever tolerated. I am lactose intolerant and raw milk I can handle. My son Zack has milk troubles and he can use raw fine. Stupid of them not to let you buy it. We can buy it here still, though it's really expensive.

Mostly we just don't do milk here at all. We don't eat cereal either.

$30.33 a month for a gallon a week.

*choke*

It's going to be hard to justify, but I want it so badly!

If it's any consolation, that's about .40 less than what a gallon of pasteurized, non-homogenized costs here at places like The Mercantile (fancy grocer).

And you're growing a person in there, so you need the nutrients. Also? You work hard, Bronwyn. And milk is a joy to you.

That sounds like a great idea, and even better if you get to name a cow.

If I join the program, I'll take the boys to the farm for a visit, and maybe they'll find a favorite.

That's the only way you can get raw milk in Colorado, too.

There are multi-agency raids going on on raw foods farms in California, and the gentleman at Double O was assaulted by a raid a few years ago. Traumatized him.

What possible reason could there be to bust down doors, gun drawn, on a fricken' dairy farm?!?

grrr
